So I'm browsing the web lying down in bed, with my laptop on my chest. Click on a link in firefox, and... my computer shuts down and won't turn back on. I got up and went to my desk and plugged it in, and this time it booted up just fine, but as soon as I unplug it, it shuts down again. I've taken out and put the battery back in numerous times. I just had the battery warrantied to deal with poor health (it was down to 35% health after 100 cycles... 6 months) and now this.

I've reset the PRAM, and done everything else I could think of. The weirdest thing is that the battery still shows full charge if I push the batt test button (I get full green lights on it) and it still shows as 95% in the menubar (and does the usual slow charge up to 100% then back down to 95%). If I pull the battery while it's running, the icon changes to an 'X', but it goes back to normal once the battery is back in.

So the computer works when powered by cable. The battery has charge, and is recognized by the computer. The computer simply refuses to draw power from the battery.

Any ideas? I guess I'll be sitting with customer service later today and see what they have to say.

No good. Still dies as soon as it's unplugged.

So is it worth my time to talk through this on the phone with them, or will they just end up telling me to go to an authorized apple retailer?

Always worth a try I guess, but I'd say they will probably just tell you to take it in.

Well I guess I'll take it in tomorrow then. The closest AASP is macstation.com, I checked their service and it looks like this is gonna cost me $50 just for them to look at it, then $85 an hour beyond that.

I never once had to spend this kind of money to fix my pc's hardware.... Nor did I ever have 3 major hardware failures in six months with a pc. At least the software side of macs is fairly trouble-free...

I personally have had many problems with all of my laptops and desktops from Apple. I wish there hardware was as good as there software. OS X is the only reason I buy there products.

But.... You have AppleCare coverage still don't you? So why don't you send it in.... for free....instead of paying someone else? I don't understand. If you use the AppleCare that COMES WITH your mac, you won't have to spend that kind of money to fix it.

I thought apple care was extra? I didn't buy it. I'm covered under warranty for the first year without applecare, I know that, but how do I use it? There's no apple store around here, and I bought it online. The only options I have are to take it to a service provider, or call tech support which everyone here has said will only result in my taking it to a service provider anyway.

Will I not get charged if it's under warranty still? I doubt it... why would this company offer a service for free?

Just call the 800 number.

Just call the 800 number. I wouldn't pay for service if it's covered under warranty.
