I've been after a 'perfect' pair of headphones all year.

Once I experienced the H1 chip in my AirPod Pros, I realised I'm all-in with this ecosystem.

My mum kindly bought me a pair of Beats Solo Pro headphones on sale for £159 for Christmas for me (they're waiting, wrapped-up).

I've been tempted to ask her to return them and I'll add £400 to get a pair of AirPod Maxes.

But here are my conclusions...
  • I'm happy to pay £550 for 'the ultimate headphones'...
  • But V1 - V2 is usually the biggest jump for any Apple gear.
  • We've already heard that multiple features were scrapped to get these out in time.
  • A 'sports' Airpod Max is more likely to match my aesthetic.
  • I'll need a new Apple TV to get Spatial Audio on my projector.
  • My Beats won't be wasted... they're on-ear and far lighter/more compact.
If I buy AirPod Pro Max V 2 (or even a Sport version, first) then I'll use them exclusively inside and on planes.

My Beats Solo Pro will still be a better choice to wear skateboarding, or for short trips in a rucksack.

And in one year from now I'll have a better pair of AirPod Maxes and a solid pair of Solo Pros as backup.

Does that sound like solid reasoning?

Beats Solo Pros sound good, but holy s*** are they painful to wear. Beats Studio 3 are on sale at Target for 175. I’d get those instead if you don’t like pain.

I would have bought a Beats Studio 3 a long time ago if it didn't come with Micro USB. I never want to see that connector again.

Normally I would never recommend the more expensive product, but in this case I think it will be worth it. For a first gen device the Airpods Max are extremely polished. The are pretty much as close to flawless as they can get. Any upgrades will be minor at best. The most extreme thing they could do is reduce the weight with different materials. I don't think you should wait for that. With that being said, you will never be as satisfied with the Beats as you would be with the Airpods Max. The sound quality and comfort will always be inferior. You should just ditch the Beats and order the Airpods Max. If you're concerned about damaging them you could always add Applcare+. If you break them while skateboarding it will only cost $29.00 for a brand new set. In all honesty if given the choice I would rather have only one set of AirPods Pro instead of any Beats product. Just try them out and see what you think. If all else fails you could always find a deal on the Beats if you absolutely must go back to them.
