i delete files but my hard drive free space stays the same?

Using a Core 2 Duo Macbook with an 80 gig drive and running out of room already, I deleted a few gigs worth of stuff, but when i go to get info on the drive, it still says the same amount is free.

Is there something I am missing here?

It's possible the files you have deleted are still being held open by another application. Easiest way to clear this is to reboot your Mac.

Go to the Force Quit.. option in the Apple menu (top-left corner) and relaunch the Finder. Does it still show the same value?

If you have File Vault turned on, then you should log out from your account or shutdown the computer. When you do that, you'll get a window from File Vault asking if you want to reclaim the space. This usually happens with the files in the file vault protected account, but for example if the files are on the drive but not in the protected folder, like on the root, the space will be available right away.

yup i have rebooted and i tried the force quit on finder, stil didnt update. Interestingly I have run Monolingual to free up some space and that does change the free amount showing.

Also, does anyone know - I downloaded Whatsize, and it shows that my 'Users' folder is by far the biggest, but it contains one folder called Grum (my username), and one called .Grum (which is huge). Anyone know what that is about?

That's because the File Vault window I wrote about in the earlier comment, at least on my Powerbook, won't appear if that wasn't the case.
