After much hemming and hawing I decided to swap my 9 day old 3.06ghz iMac for the new one. It dawned on me I'd be silly not to based on twice the hard drive and twice the RAM (which as we know is faster DDR3 and expandable to 8GB) alone.

The GT130 vs the 8800GS was my only point of contention. During a long hike with my dog this afternoon I realized I was getting caught up in speculations and unknown details that I'll never see or notice or even really care about. I also decided that Apple has never let me down before in that every time I buy a new product (imac, mbp, iphone you name it) it is always better and faster and bigger than the one I bought before. This is through "minor bump" product refreshes as well as more major updates.

So, in a man with his mutt moment of zen I decided for myself that the GT130 was most likely a very nice card, and at the very least comparable to the 8800GS in the older model, if not better. This also led me to thinking that if the ATI 4850 was so much better than the GT 130, Apple would be charging more than a mere $50 upgrade fee (although it is not relevant to my situation as waiting for the ATI is not an option for me, but worth questioning nonetheless).

So far I can simply but honestly say this is snappier than the beast of a machine I was using only this morning. Everything just seems quicker. Even the migration I did (only 90 GB's) took about half the time of the same info I migrated to my previous gen. Indeed the faster RAM helps such tasks out tremendously but it's nice to actually feel it and notice a "boost". I was afraid I may not notice any type of change in performance at all and that has not been the case.

I've only spent about an hour gaming thus far. 30 minutes in WoW and 30 minutes in Spore but can honestly say that the look and feel of both games are amazing and just seem crisper than they did on the earlier unit. An interesting note that in Spore the default video settings used to slide my previous iMac to all high settings except one setting which was medium. On this machine every single setting was "defaulted" to highest settings in game - for what that is worth. In WoW I had everything completely max'd (including screen and death glow effects) and 4x AA. I intentionally cap my FPS at 60 (keeps things running cooler) and they did not drop below 50 - 60 fps a single time. This is on a busy server and even in Dalaran (a major city in WoW with many many players which usually causes frames to massively drop)!

In short this new 3.06 GHz iMac is a noticeable upgrade over the previous 3.06 GHz iMac. From RAM to HDD to even the so far somewhat maligned GT130. Stay tuned as I will post more results and observations later tonight and tomorrow as well. I'm looking forward to testing/seeing how Vista x64 handles in Bootcamp as well as Parallels but that won't be until tomorrow sometime.

** Side Note - Another Pleasant Apple Store Experience **

The manager at the Apple store I go to (which is a 4 hour drive away total) was not going to waive the restocking fee for me - at first. After schmoozing her a bit and getting her to laugh at a few of my most horrendous jokes, I asked her if she would make a deal with me. I would spend $200 there in her store if she waived my RSF - and she said "deal"! Since I was going to pick up iWork and Parallels 4 anyway, I simply threw in some new headphones for my wife and pretty much called it an even swap - so that really made my day.

On top of that, they were out of the wired keyboards with num pad AND remote controls so she also swapped out my little num-padless keyboard with the current full board from the iMac I was returning. And get this she throws me the remote and says "keep this to we are all out of them so it's yours"! You don't get that kind of service returning/buying a Dell from the Geek Squad! ;)

I wonder why this is. The hard drive isn't twice as fast.

EDIT: Yeah, congrats on the swap!

Doh! Last time I did it I was pulling from an older MBP partition. This time I was pulling from an FW800 external drive as I finally set up time machine on a decent external last week. Asking myself your question jogged my brain a bit. :p

iTommy -get this

I too purchased the 09 3.06 with the GT130 -I almost decided to wait for the ATI and came really close to purchasing the older 3.06 that you just swapped and initially suggested that I buy! I just couldn't justify getting the older model for not much cheaper than the new. Get this... even as I type I am on my G4 powerbook -the new iMac is in the other room in the box unopened! Until reading your post I was still semi debating on taking it back and waiting for the ATI update! Ultimately I decided as you did --that if that ATI card is such a better card then they would charge more than a measly 50 bucks. Also if and when I do need to upgrade in a year or two, I can upgrade to a card that is after this latest iteration from ATI, and upgrade the RAM to 8 gig then also.
Thanks for your post about your final wrestling with what to do. In a few minutes I will go open my new prize!

Wow Jim you really hold me in some kind of high regard. Most of my friends and family would tell you that while I'm often "fun" to follow, I'm not always the "smartest" to follow! Not to worry I'm mostly kidding...mostly. :p

As for my comments to you yesterday; although I'm pretty sure you just mentioned them for fun, allow me to explain where I was coming from. For a first time buyer, that is to say someone looking for a new iMac right now after the updates came out - I would still suggest to them the older 3.06 Ghz model if found for some of the great current closeout prices. It is indeed still a high end iMac and will be for some time. The thing with me is the commitment was made last week when I made my purchases pre-updates. Obviously this left me with the decision of whether or not returning for the new model would be an upgrade, and a decision I had to make soon. Today I realized that for me, it would be. Thus what I finally did today (and am pleased with so far). :D

Wow man talk about willpower unopened in some other room!? I certainly have no doubt you should set that beast free and enjoy all that it can and will do for you. You'll love it. It's more than enough machine.

Well tommy to be fair yours wasn't the only advice I was considering. I am playing with the new machine and am a bit overwhelmed! Don't even know where to start. I do like it a lot and am sure I will be spending much time with it. I unlike you am not a gamer, but they do sound interesting. I am a bit out of the loop on video editing... have much footage to go through but I am going to get all my files lined up first and get a workflow going. Thanks to all on this forum! I will come back often and post when I can add something relevant. One of the first things I need to do is figure out how to set this baby up to dual boot!

I wonder why this is. The hard drive isn't twice as fast.

This got me researching a bit as this drive just felt (feels) faster as I read/write more. Turns out it is....

Older stock 3 ghz imac had Western Digital Caviar Blue 500 GB HDD = 16 MB cache and 1 processor.

This current 3 ghz imac boasts the Western Digital Caviar Black 1 TB = 32 MB cache and 2 processors.

How is the fan noise old model versus new?

Lucky! While I didn't have to haggle to get the restock fee waived, they wouldn't swap the wireless keyboard and mouse I was returning for the small wired one they had in store. I was willing to pay, but they apparently didn't have a way to ring up the proper machine. I did feel though, that I got great service as I usually have with Apple. I've got 2 iPhones and an Apple TV and this is my first Mac. I'm gaining momentum. Next to replace will be the Dell laptops!

Another little review

I got the new 3.06 iMac on Tuesday as well, and I love it. I'm only in high school, so it was very hard for me to part with $2,200, but I'm fairly used to it because I've built most of my PCs for $1,000+ each. Having said that, I am very impressed with OS X, and I can't see myself buying a PC ever again (though I haven't tried Windows 7 yet). Everything is much simpler and *cleaner* (it even inspired me to clean my room and desk). The (three) PCs I built all used high-end parts, so I'm not overly *wow*ed by the speed, but this is certainly up to par with my Windows machines, and the simplicity of OS X is well worth it.

My only issue is that I HATE the small keyboard. I do have a Logitech G15 from my PC, but I feel weird about switching to a keyboard with the Windows key and no command key. I know it works, but it just feels weird to me. I did replace the mighty mouse with my Logitech mouse, though (Apparently I hate Apple's accessories--would Apple let me exchange my little keyboard for the big one?).

I don't see the remote as anything I would have used excessively, but I still wouldn't have minded having it. I've always loved watching movies and TV shows on my computers, especially now with this 24" screen, but I definitely don't mind using my mouse to click the file.

I never used the older iMacs, but I think you made a smart decision because this machine is amazing. I don't think I'll be replacing mine for quite a while, and my next purchase will probably be a MacBook (Pro?). So anyway, have fun with your new computer. I know I will.
