I got my ECID number and entered into the purplera1n site.. got that file and downloaded it. Jailbroke the 3gs today.

However, when the dev team version of the jailbreak comes out, the same ECID method I did for the purplera1n jailbreak will still be applicable, right? The reason I'm asking is because I'm seeing another method floating around by the dev team... what's the difference between the two? Hope someone can clear this up. Thanks.

Wut was the point of the EDID method anyway... I jailbroke without entering mine in. It will be the same number as far as your original post. Unless you swap your phone for a refurb in case of problems.

The purple rain one only captures the IBSS. File and the dev team wants you to capture the IBEC and IBSS files. Yea you don't need those files now to JB but in the future you will when apple patches the holes up. I think the whole point for the files is, so you can restore after a JB in the future When apple updates. The ibss and ibec files are sent to apples servers when you restore, so if apple see the files are diffrent from what theyare supposed to be (jailbreak) they won't restore.

Can I do the dev team method with my phone already jailbroken via purplera1n?

I wish someone (mainly the Dev Team) would OFFICIALLY announce If we need both methods or not. At first the said do the ECID thing and we'd be "set for life" but now they are telling us to do this but not officially saying this is the one we definately need or if we'd still be fine with just the EDIC method. I did both so I'm not worried, but it can get confusing when they say one way is the way then 2 days later change that. I appreciate what they do, and no, I don't think they "owe" us a JB, or anything else, but sometimes their information/instructions can be confusing and contradict each other so it'd be nice to just have them organized and straightforward.

The Dev team basicly said to get the IBEC and IBSS files, so that should answer your question.

Quote from Dev team:
"So during a usual recovery with iTunes, your signed iBEC is written to /tmp and during a DFU mode restore the signed iBSS is written there also. To be sure, restore in both modes one after another to be able to grab them both. You’ll need to keep an eye on the temp directory and copy it before it is deleted again by iTunes."

I am sorry, and maybe i am just totally ignorant but, this really does not seem to answer the question about which method is the right one.

I too am really confused as to which method is the right one to do.

It took me two tries. I had a YouTube tutorial playing in the backround and was matching my speed of doing things to his and the his folder popped up before mine, so I thought I messed up but then I saw it and didn't react in time, I copied but couldn't paste in time cuz I had a window open blocking the desktop. On my 2nd try I resized the temp window so it was just showing a few lines and had my entire desktop visible so I nailed the 3 second window. Of course Vista (or my friend's desktop settings, not sure which) automatically aligned the folder with all the other icons in the next open spot so I had no clue if I got it (iTunes window hid the icon lineup) til the very end, but I was so relieved when I saw that I had lol.
