Ok I get that they are trying to get us more healthy but I don't understand the feature.

Am I expected to put my iphone next to my bed? What if I don't sleep with my iphone? Does the bedtime setting sycn with my ipad?

Or apple watch? I bought the apple dock so I can use the watch as an alarm clock while laid on the side. So how does the watch work with Bedtime?

This whole thing just doesn't make sense to me.

Also, the feature is suggesting that it knows when I fall asleep and how well I slept. How? Am I suppose to put the phone under my pillow?

The new Bedtime is just a fancier Alarm. If you don't use your iPhone as your alarm then no, you're not expected to put your phone next to your bed.

The feature doesn't physically track or know when you fall asleep. You manually tell it "I go to bed at "x" time on "y" days and wake up at "a" time on those "y" days.

It's designed to mostly work with third party sleep tracking apps and adds the data to your Health app. It also lets you set a notification based on sleep/wake times that you prefer to remind you it's almost time for bed to get the amount of sleep you've specified. If you're on your device within those set times that is tracked in Health to determine how much sleep you got for any given night as well. The wake sounds are pretty cool too.

i'm not sure it doesn't physically track. i had all sorts of weird data recorded which i think was due to using my phone for brief periods when waking up repetedly on a few sleepless night edit: see pic from health app

Yeah, it definitely tracks when you're on the device within your desired sleep times. I'm assuming it's just screen time that it's tracking and not device movement or anything of that sort.

What?!?!? You don't sleep with your iPhone? What if you want to Google something in the middle of the night?!?!?!

I use a program called Sleep++ to track my sleep. It provides the data to both a HeartWatch program I use as well as the  Health app.

I've found bedtime quite useful even though I sometimes "cheat" by using my iPad if I wake up at night. It adds a bit of rigour to bedtimes to help ensure I get my 7 hours (which I tend to need). The wake up sounds are gentler than the alarms and it's easier to adapt the times to daily circumstances by rotating the dial.

It works for me but realise it's not suitable for everyone.

Um, what is there not to get?

1. It is overall a better alarm than before, with better wake up sounds, and even independent volume.
2. You get notifications to remind you to go to bed on time (like you're supposed to).
3. If your phone is motionless for an 8 hour period, it is easy to assume you're sleeping, so the tracking is rather accurate. If you continue moving around / using your phone past the bedtime, or pick it up and start your day before the wake time, the data will reflect that.

The watch has nothing to do with this. Not everyone has an Apple Watch. I've since stopped using Apple Watch as an alarm clock, as this is much better.

When you go to setup the bedtime feature I remember reading something about how it tracks your sleep. Maybe the microphone is working or sensing movement? I haven't read anything about this so maybe it's all fluff

Thanks to this feature I have one less reason buying Apple Watch to track my basic health data. It does record something in the background, like your iPhone movement. It also uses microphone, i guess, to determine if you are "in bed". Sometimes I use computer at night but not sleeping, however clock app still records those times as "I am sleeping", so I believe it uses microphone as well.
Also thanks to this feature, I know how many hours I have slept and I can use this data to decide whether I need to sleep early or snap during the day, or just work as usual.

It's really meant to wake us up more gently, with an alarm that starts out soft and gets louder in intensity until you wake up. I like this feature, and have been using it since upgrading to iOS 10 GM.

And, Bedtime is to help us develop more routine sleeping habits, in concept.

It's very cool, but it requires a fitness/health wearable. Apple watch isn't a good one with its nightly charging and lack of many features.

My Garmin smartwatch/fitness band i use for running and cycling tracks sleep. It gets 5-7 day battery life tracking steps, heart rate, sleep, etc. So I can wear it through the night.

I goofed up two nights ago, but you can see more history via health app or Garmin connect.

I used it for a few days and I don't like it, it is basically an alarm. Perhaps it is because I'm used to using Sleep Cycle (over a year) and this app wakes me up at the right sleep cycle.

It's not fluff for everyone. I was using the reminders app to get myself to unplug and get ready for bed (since I often lose track of time or just plain stay up too late). It helps to remind myself that I want to establish and stick to a healthy sleep routine. So I'm looking forward to having this functionality. But of course not everyone will need or want it.

Personally I use old and cheap Miband with color LEDs 1st gen and it's enough for me. Sleep tracking, vibration when have to wake up (alarm), when reached my daily steps number or someone is calling me. Only miss SMS notify working on Android... But that's Apple fault to not let any other smart accessory except their smart watch notify about SMS.

Others can receive SMS.

Garmin and Fitbit watches do. Even the text of the sms.

When I set mine for a 30 minute reminder before bed I don't get it. 15 minutes works. It stopped working for me at the half hour setting back in one of the early betas and I have not figured it out yet. It still tracks my sleep but does not tell me its bedtime.

The other thing is I use Do Not Disturb. It comes on at 10PM. My bedtime is set currently at 11:30. The notice, when it works, does not make a sound. This is expected I guess since I do not want to be disturbed. If you have your phone unlocked looking at it at alarm time for bed you get a nice sound like a nursery rhyme. Wakeup sounds are so much nicer than regular alarm sounds.

Overall I have liked using it but as stated earlier, its an alarm with fluff. I'll take it though.

Perfect, thanks!

"Bedtime calculates hours in bed by analyzing your motion and device usage"

That's the bit that got me -how does it analyse your motion? Does it work like the SleepCycle app (microphone and sensors?)
If the phone is not moving between the hours you set as your bedtime it assumes you must be asleep.

It's for fitness/health watches.

My Garmin tracks my sleep, and syncs data into Healthkit.

But my Garmin has a 5-7days battery life, so I wear it through the night, for running, cycling, basically use it all the time.

Apple has no fitness/health wearables.
Perfect, thanks!

The more data you give it, the more accurate it is. My Garmin watch reports sleep data. It gets relayed to Apple Health for processing and metrics.

If you have an Apple Watch that you don't wear at night, and it has nothing to rely on, then very little metrics. For example iPhone movement, which is useless.
