I don't get HDMI restrictions - Here's why...

I just bought the EyeTV HD from Elgato for my 27" iMac. I can hook it up to my HD cable box and record EVERYTHING, including On Demand movies in 1080i! Yes, it's not 1080p, but it's still the same resolution of 1920x1080.

Why is Hollywood so concerned about what you can and can't hook HDMI up to when you can get almost identical recordings from component video devices like the EyeTV HD?

So you have to live with stereo audio and "i" instead of "p", but at the end of the day, you still get a pristine 1920x1080 recording in H.264 format.

Any thoughts on this matter?
 
it looks like it stays on the device and at most a secure connection to your phone. not like you can just do anything with the content you record

You absolutely can. Once recorded in EyeTV, it can easily be exported to a variety of formats...H.264, MPEG4, Quicktime Movie -- all of which could be shared on sharing sites and such...
 
If I am not mistaken 1080i refreshes (scans)2 to present an image where 1080p scans once to produce an image.

the other considerations for HDMI is the higher quality audio codex

I know many that are very content with 720p stereo pirated movies.
I on the other hand want the advanced codex and 1080p presentation.
for my 3 flat screens
the 2 42 inch 720p is acceptable without any quams
on the 54 inch 720p looks good but 1080p pops

Yea, but I mean the difference I'd truly experience between a 1080i recording on my Mac and a 1080p recording on my Mac is minimal, thus HDMI and HDCP need to calm down...1080p isn't the greatest thing since sliced bread in comparison to the attainable 1080i and 720p. It's all HD.

PS - My iPhone 4 is awesome (in response to your signature) --- no flawed design for me. I put my hands all over the thing and always have 2-3+ bars. Not sure what all the fuss is about and would never consider another phone.
 
Yeah the whole licensing dispute is pretty dumb, but so is a lot of commercial stuff.

Just deinterlace your 1080i material under windows using tempgaussmc with nnedi2, and you basically have full hd 1080p at 60frames a second.

What exactly does this mean?: "just deinterlace your 1080i material under windows using tempgaussmc with nnedi2":confused:

Also - seems the EyeTV software has some settings for deinterlacing as well...hmmm
 
tempgaussmc is a very high quality bob deinterlacer (bob means it takes each interlaced field and makes a new field out of it, so it doubles the framerate). It also uses motion compensation (the highest form of deinterlacing quality) and temporal gaussian blurring to denoise and smooth out other artifacts. nnedi is an edge oriented interpolator (image resizer) that helps a greed deal with deinterlacing, as it'll in effect anti-alias edges and make them very smooth, sharp and crisp.

I'm saying all this because it's a great way of getting your material recorded from the elgato to be true full hd quality, and is a way better alternative to other hardware implemented live deitnerlacers like elgato uses-- which is probably just a low pass blender or simple yadif.

Wow, you know your video! I think I'm ok enough with the straight H.264 1080i videos that the EyeTV HD produces. Not sure the work involved to "convert" it to progressive scan is worth the time for the minimal visual benefits.

While I have your attention, would you recommend I record sports games in 1080i or 720p? I know the progressive scan is supposedly better for movement, but there's something about the higher resolution of 1920x1080 that attracts me. I mean, many TV networks like CBS broadcast football games in 1080i and they look great, so I think I prefer going with that...just interested in your technical thoughts...:p
 
Your personal visual experiences should be the deciding factor. ;)

I hate my local cable provider, as it compresses my football games horribly, so when everything's moving fast, I see lots of macroblocking. :(

Nah, my team's the Jets. We're just now starting to do stuff, so I'm really looking forward to next season.

Haha...the Week 2 Super Bowl Champs from last year huh? Well...as long as we have Bill Belichick and Tom Brady, we aren't going anywhere;)

And what I love is that the Pats get to fly under the radar this season for this first time since maybe 2003. Largely because fat Rex can't stop flapping his jaws to the media about how great the 9-7 Jets are.

Fact is, when you play all-world QB's like Tom Brady and Peyton Manning, you can't blitz 8 guys every down like the Jets like to do...what you get is the 2nd half of the AFC Championship Game...when Manning picked them apart...

Better yet the young Miami Dolphins are flying way under the radar like always! With BMarsh in town, a bunch of talented rookies, Cam Wake, Mike Nolan, Karlos Dansby, one of the best rushing attacks (when healthy) and not to mention one of the youngest rosters, I'm a happy camper.

Jets can talk all the smack they want but the fins swept them. The Patriots on the other hand are still holding on trying to avoid disaster in the near future when they go into rebuilding, but until then they are the team to beat in the AFCE.

Erm, isn't that like, really really slow (like less than 1 fps, even on a fast machine)?
