I don't get iCloud!

I have 20GB on my iPad and iCloud has just finished backing up into the cloud. Of my 5GB there's still 2.5GB left, so what has been backed up, and what not?
How, for example, can I make it backup my movies? Or indeed make sure that no movies ever get uploaded?

I don't understand what the purpose of iCloud is, I suppose. I would get it if I had enough space to up my whole pics/music/videos, but even the 50gb on offer wouldnt be enough for that.

The user data is what is getting backed up, e.g. contacts, notes, calendar etc.

Apps can already be redownloaded in iTunes, so it only needs to backup the user data from those apps.

Go into your Settings -> iCloud

Scroll down to Storage & Backup then click on Manage Storage.

Now you will see your iPhone under Backups. Click it.

From here you have a list of all apps that get backed up and how much space each one is taking. Apart from actually being physically with you, there's not much more I can explain.

Or Reminder sync
Or Notes sync
Or Bookmarks sync
Or any app dev who codes it into their apps to store data to your iCloud 'documents & data' area.

Unless you put Auto iCloud Backups on, they work perfectly!

The best thing about iCloud...

I had a 3GS, upgraded that to iOS5. Bought a 4S this morning, got it home, set it up. ALL of my app data was on my phone within 3 MINUTES. I still had to download the actual content of the app, but thats my save information. And that took 3 minutes!

It was amazingly quick.

And no, i dont just have 1 app, I have 102!

I thought I had selected iCloud backup when I set up my iPhone 4. However, it's not selected under the Storage and Backup selection and shows no amount of the 5.0 gig being used.

When I select iCloud Backup, it tells me it will no longer backup to my computer automatically when I sync with iTunes. Why can't it do both? Of course I want my iPhone and computer to have the same information. I'm confused.

Just backup to iCloud and them switch the option when you are by your computer and wifi sync it there.

You can still switch between the two, icloud or itunes, at will. You can go back and forth.

If you back up a second time to iCloud, it only updates what's changed or has been added correct?

So if my phone doesn't change much, the 5 GB storage used won't change much either?

And lastly, the 5 GB is per device, not Apple ID right?

No, but it can only backup automatically to either iCloud or iTunes. I have mine set on iCloud for automatic downloads and do manual backups to iTunes.

Yes, but let's say you have an app that weighs in at 50 MB. Since Apple already have this app in their system, they don't have to take it from you. Thus making your backup 50 MB lighter.

Yup, and if you activate "sync via wifi" it syncs automatically with iTunes when the computer and the iDevice is on the same wifi and the iDevice is connected to a power source and in locked mode (not being used). The only thing that you have to choose is automatic backup - either to iCloud or iTunes, but it doesn't constrain you in any way.
