I dont think this is good... (RAM usage following a boot)

My MBP has been suffering from miserably slow boots and random shutdowns (on battery power) lately. What has struck me as odd is the RAM usage immediately following a boot. I've attached a screencap of my activity monitor for your evaluation.

kernel_task always uses 50 threads. Is this normal? I'm using my MBP for finals this week, so hopefully I can sort this out without having to take it in for service.

i'm assuming you have the older mbp? anyhow, just chirping in, have a new mbp 2.4 thats working perfectly fine with the 50 kernel thread things.

it's a Merom machine. how's your RAM usage following a fresh boot?

That's normal for kernel_task. It's the process that pretty much runs the entire OS. What startup items and login Items do you have? You have plenty of available RAM, but the random shut downs are disorienting. What peripherals do you have plugged in? Do you have third party RAM?
