I feel like it's more of a test on if a person likes blue light or not, not that it has any actual tangible benefits.

True Tone preserves the color curve of your display as it matches the white point to the ambient light around the display. For professionals, this is vital to content creation and photography (not so much video color grading), while consumers mainly benefit from less eye strain and rich HDR color range.

I have heard a wide range of opinions...I just keep it on now and switch my display preset if I need a specific color gamut output.

Im suspicious of True Tone. Every Mac I have purchased sine the introduction of TT has suffered display issues, Be they tinting, uniformity or dimming. I have purchased then returned MacBooks (similarly iPhones) only to find the replacement to have similar display tinting issue. My current Mac has a slight pink hue (where white should be) but I decided it was a keeper based on the one it replaced which had an ugly nicotine stained yellow appearance, washed out colours and noticeably dimmer than my old 2014 Mbp.

Incidentally, we have 3 older MacBook at home. All pre-true tone devices and there is genuinely not one of those displays have tinting or any noticeable uniformity issues, despite their age. Im just not 100% convinced the TT ambient light scanning technology isn't contributing at some degree to the surge in display tint threads we see posted on these forums in recent years

While this is an issue I have experienced on iPhone, TT is very consistent in its white point adjustment on my MacBook Pro. Everyone’s experience will vary and that’s why it’s hard to determine if anything should be done to adjust True Tone outside of what the display chip already adjusts.
