I don't want iCloud!

I keep getting the reminder that my" iCloud is nearly full, upgrade".
I notice that everything I put on my desktop is actually in the iCloud and if I delete it from the iCloud, it disappears from my Desktop.
How can I KEEP things on my Desktop and disable this annoying iCloud that seems to dominate Apple systems?

But then everything disappears from Desktop???

Copy data somewhere else off Desktop, disable iCloud Desktop sync. Copy data back to Desktop.
