ok i just got my macbook pro, runs a little warm but not much more then any other computer and i thought i herd the infamous whine but it wasnt much more then a fan sound and im sure its not what everyone was so worried about (ps if your looking at getting a computer dont let the people on the forums scare you into not getting one because of thier experiances with it, i almost didnt get it cuz on the heat and whine issues but they were blown way out of porportion) that said i have some questions as a new mac user!
1.When downloading programs i download to desktop but i dont know where to but those downloaded files eg. msnmessenger.dmg. iv thrown them out and the program still runs, is that what i should always do?
2. should i use safari or firefox? which is faster etc.
3. how do i make windows full sized? i find that for the most part when i open a window its too small and i have to resize using the botton line icon in the bottom right corener of the window, can i save this size?
4. how do i see a list of everything on my computer? im pretty sure iv accedently coppied my itunes music folder which i had titled music to more then one spot and i want to avoid doing this
5. lastly are there any good guides (preferably video guides) on using macosx?
6.whats this famous coconut wattery widget and is it worth it?

Thanks for the help im finnaly a switcher!

You can if you like. A .dmg file is simply a disk image, which is basically a CD stored on your hard drive. After you install the program, there is no need for you to keep the .dmg unless there is an uninstaller on there (very, very rare) or you don't want to copy other files (manual, etc.) to your hard drive. However, since they are already taking up space in the .dmg, you might as well copy them or trash the .dmg.

It's a matter of personal preference. Just make sure if you use FireFox, you have the latest version so it's a Universal Binary.

Click the green button in the top left of the window. This will resize the window to fit the contents, not necessarily to full-screen size. If you want to resize to full-screen, then manually resize it. There may be a key combination to do this, however.

I don't understand this question. You browse the Finder just like you would browse Windows Explorer. You can use Spotlight (hit Apple key + spacebar) to search for files/folders/anything. Search for "itunes" and see which folders are found.

Tons. I recommend the "Missing Manual to Mac OS X Tiger." Search on amazon.

I assume you mean the Coconut Battery application. It's free, so yes, it's worth it. :)

Good luck!

1. http://guides.macrumors.com/Installing_Applications_in_Mac_OS_X
2. Try the both and see for yourself. Everyone has a different opinion.
3. Press the green button in the top left. It makes things as big as then need to be.
4. Not sure what you mean?
5. As a newbie, almost any question you have has been answered. Search the forums or try out guide (not video): http://guides.macrumors.com/
6. It checks the capacity of your battery. Probably not something you need on a new mac.

how do i uninstall programs? is there something like add/remove programs like windows or do i just search for all files relating to a program and drag to trash can?

I love AppZapper.

2. should i use safari or firefox? which is faster etc.

This is a very good question for intel macs, actually. I know that, for G4 and G5 macs, Safari took advantage of altivec, so it is (allegedly) faster than other browsers running on that system (I still use Firefox because I am in love with adblock, but it is noticeable slower). Does anyone know if there is similar optimization in Safari on the intels?
