I fixed iPhone SE yellow tint with iOS 10 Color Filters option

Hello everyone,

I have a recent iPhone 5s from work which is plagued by a very yellow tint display.

I was hoping when I bought an iPhone SE that it would be better. Unfortunately, the model I got had the exact same dull yellow tint display. Bad luck again

I visited a local apple store to see that some iPhone SE models were perfect with a normal display and some had the same dull yellow tint display. Maybe there are 2 display manufacturers ?

Anyway, since the iPhone SE I got was complicated to return (from a carrier) and above all, it seems that yellow tint display are very common (so any exchange could result in the exact same display), I tried to play with iOS 10 Public Beta and its new Color Filters option.

Normally Color Filters is made for another purpose but I was able to achieve something that seems balanced with this setting :

General > Accessibility > Display Accommodations > Color Filters > Toggle Color Filters > Select Color Tint

Then put "Intensity" at minimum, and I placed hue like on the image below ("Nuance" in French) :

It's very hard to find the right balance since "Hue" can result in very wrong colors, but there is just a place that seems "right" and was able to achieve the slightly bluer display (but still right colors) I was looking for.

The iPhone SE with iOS 10 is on the left, the iPhone 5s in the middle, and an iPhone 6s Plus, which I find perfect colorwise is on the right (before the setting iPhone SE and iPhone 5s were exactly the same) :

I know the result is slight blueish but I find it so much better !

It proves proper color calibration settings would be the easy solution to people who complain about yellow tint displays without the need to exchange it several times !

Hopefully this eliminates the need for some returns, user control for people who get a display that isn't their tint preference,

Before and after on my 12.9 iPP (no, Night shift is off):

Similar results on SE, goes from really pink to not. The camera isn't really capturing it as well, though so left it out,

The thing is, your eyes adjust and compensate for any native tints to the display you're looking at over time, but comparing any two devices is going to make your head hurt as to which is correct and which isn't,

Looks more pristine than my 6s plus with color profiles,

Now that's is something worth for upgrading. I am not sold my iOS 10 and decided not going upgrade. But if this is true, I will upgrade from day 1.

As I was just sifting through the new iOS 10 update I came across a color filters option in settings -> accessibility -> display accommodations.

Now if you get that "yellow" tint iPhone you can manually calibrate your screen color to your liking. Enjoy!

You're welcome. I know this has been a frustration of mine when ordering new iPhones yearly. Some have great color calibration and others do not. I used to play the exchange game but you can now calibrate the screen to your liking!

I know this will be a big deal for some people.

Just remember, the yellow screen is usually as a result of the glue not completely dried in the screen process. This will fix itself over time so in reality, you will have to 'recalibrate' it again later.

No. This was an excuse since whatever phone had it first. iPhone 4? A myth that you shouldn't believe.

It's already mentioned but you can manually adjust the tint. If it's too yellow drag the INTENSITY bar over to about 25%, then pull the HUE slider toward the middle. That should cool it off a bit. When you have too much yellow you want to add more blue and magenta.

Put your 7+ next to your 6s for a reference and you should be able to match them.

I love this feature. Have been able to make my iPad Pro and iPhone 7 Plus match the coolness off my iPad Air 2, so they are all pretty much exactly the same.

Have you managed to cool your iPad Air 2 even further?
