Hello! So I was walking around in my neighborhood and there was some person who was giving away his old computers (I would assume). He had a Mac Pro from '08 I believe, and it had a sign that said 'free'.

So naturally I picked it up, and it obviously doesn't work, so could I go to a Genius Bar and ask them to fix it? Would it be worth it spending time to fix a machine so old?

I just want your opinions to see what you would do with a Mac Pro...

Depending on what's actually wrong with it, I would definitely look into fixing it up, as long as it won't cost a bunch of $$......you could just get it running and then sell it for a small amount....since you got it free, anything you get will be pure profit, minus whatever you put into it...........

True...how much could you sell a '08 Mac Pro? If I dump a 1TB HDD in it and upgrade the RAM to 16GB? 500$?

Why go to apple? Make it a DYI, saves you some cash and you get a fun experience. Of course, you would have to find out what is wrong with it, but that wouldn't be too hard.

I concur on the DYI approach. Keep in mind though that Apple will likely diagnose it for free, only charging for an actual hardware repair. Could be worth lugging into the Genius Bar if you don't have much troubleshooting experience with these machines. They could at least point you in the right repair direction.

A little more if it's an octo-core. I have the 2008 octo-core and I can easily get more than $500 for it.

What I found when getting mine fixed, if the CPU is OK then it's probably not bad. I had a daughter board replaced for $250. If the CPU is bad then it's more expensive.

cpus got quite cheap. i guess the x5482 goes for around 80 euros on ebay (from a shop, mind!)

and the x5482 is the 3.2 ghz version

A lot of value is in the aesthetics as well as in the performance. How clean is this thing and is it scratched and marred. I sold my 3,1 to a reseller who paid for shipping for $800.00. The machine was pristine.

Have you noticed any missing hardware inside?

What happens when you push the power button?

My mom did let me bring the desktop upstairs...I'll reply once she let's me.

Awesome! I'll update the story once I get more information on it.
