I've given up the SSD option!! 4-6 weeks are too much wait. I've orderded the SSD + 1TB but cancelled and today I switched to the other top of the line option: iMac 27", i7 3.4GHz + 16GB + 2TB HD + 2GB GFX
Should get my new iMac in 3 days. I'm sooooo excited!! We'll see what to do with imac SSD in the future. In the meantime, I'll keep on enjoying my SSD MacBook Pro.

I did the exact same thing
 
Apparently the "issues" that were reported by engadget about HDD/SDD self-installation don't exist (i.e. fans going crazy etc.), hopefully putting in an after-market SSD shouldn't be too much trouble! At the very least it'll be a hell of a lot cheaper.
 
Ow! $600 to go to 16gb ram.

I know I know, you probably figure it's just easier to have them do it but man, that's alot of cash left on the table when doing it yourself. It really is not much harder than putting a piece of bread in a toaster.

Steve the butler, make me some toast, you need to earn the $400 extra I am paying you!

i agree, $400 for 2 minutes of work (not even work) is not worth it. $400 is almost worth the price of an SSD.

you paid them 600 for 16gb ram!

must be nice to be able to burn money like that!
 
I couldn't be bothered to wait either, far too expensive and far too long to wait to really be bothered with, I may add one later either internally or via Thunderbolt though.
 
Yeah definitely not the best way to spend $600. I bought 8GB of RAM for $45 at a local shop, so I have 12GB and that's probably more than I could ever need/use. But I did the same thing, the SSD option was just way too long of a wait so I decided to get the 1TB model and upgrade the processor and graphics. Beastly machine if you ask me. :D
 
I can't help but comment

If I were able to spend more than $3000 , I would have bought a MacPro + Apple Cinema Display, which eventually a better option and performer, still better GPU, better cooling system, and expandability even with no Thunderbolt at the moment.

The main value of an iMac (especially the hi-end 27") is to having a great performance, really close to a MacPro .. with $1000 - $2000 less and the great cinema display still included.

The need of an iMac would be obsolete if you spend that chunk of money. Yeah yeah it's not my money, so who am I to judge?

Burning money like this isn't nice no matter how much money you have. Spending $400 more than you have to consistently through life means you are left with less than you could have had.

The rich don't get richer by being stupid.

Do you really need one to one? - $100
applecare iMac $125 @ BH photo. -$50
Skip mouse, use old one. -$70
Skip iWork. -$80. If you only want, say, Pages, buy separate, $20 each.
Skip the SSD. Get it next time when its cheaper. You dont need it. -$500
Order BTO i7 from smalldog in VT, no tax. i7 with no SSD is $2300.

Save $800

Actually it's not. $500 for SSD option or $600 for SSD+1TB HD.

1) Do you really need one to one? -- NO - $100

2) AppleCare iMac $125 @ BH photo. -- Did not know thank you -$50

3) Skip mouse, use old one. -$70 (on the fence about this) -70 or +70

4) Skip iWork. -$80. If you only want, say, Pages, buy separate, $20 each -- GOOD POINTS! Actually was thinking of not getting it right now and wait till iWork 11 comes out and then yes on Mac App Store I can pick and choose the programs once they are released -$80

5) Skip the SSD. Get it next time when its cheaper. You dont need it. Actually, I'm planning on keeping this 6-8 years so despite the high price in the market "next time" will be too long in the future. +$600

If you don't need 2 3 seconds faster loading, just skip SSD .. it's not a necessity, it's a luxury item.

SSD would be cheaper 2 3 years from now to reach today's HDD price with equivalent capacity.

And 3 years from now, who knows you'll gain enough strength and need to upgrade your iMac, in which SSD could be standard .. be patient :D

But everyone who owns a MacBook Air say they would never look back on not getting a SSD

SSD is instant loading. 5X faser boot times, and is the best upgrade you can do for a PC or Mac. More important than the processor. Gives the greatest amount of performance over any other thing you can do to your machine.

Once you use a SSD, you will not want to use a traditional HD, trust me. The performance is that profound.

No reason to wait three years. You can boot from a external drive via thunderbolt in the near future and buy a small SSD for just a boot drive and keep your apps and boot on it only. Keep your home folder on the HD. Problem solved. 128GB SSD is not expensive.

I am waiting a few more weeks because I would rather have my SSD in my imac, but i is not a necessity to have it there. Thunderbolt is as fast or faster than a SATA 3.

Macbook air has options, you may get 64, 128 or 256gb

I, for the price would pick 128gb macbook air and still able to enjoy the speed without paying too much

OTOH, iMac doesnt have that privilege. Either you order 256gb or no ssd at all!!

That's what turn me off. The lowest ssd $/Gb today is in 128Gb. I might end up buying one and ask a friend who works in AASP to install it for me

But if u have spare to burn another $600, u shouldn't bother :)

EDIT: Beside that, MacBook Air´speed is still an ¨illusion¨. It might boot 10 seconds faster than even i7 iMac, but it encodes video 30minutes longer, so you do the math .. 10 seconds should be a bit slower compared to 30minutes ain´t it :p

But of course, if they use SSD 128 Gb with rational price, I would pick it anyday !! :D

Yea dude of course I understand, boot time might not 5x faster though, but ... sure SSD would make u think u just bought a new computer :p

I was talking about getting Internal SSD out of the box of an iMac. I myself wouldnt wait for 3 years, once external SSD with TB released, it would even faster than SATA, it's a no brainer
 
I wish I had the same kind of money to burn as many of you guys. I feel like my iMac budget is small compared to everyone else, here's mine:

I alloted $2,600 just for the iMac and I will purchasing it with the education discount and the back-to-school promotion. I'll be upgrading to 16GB RAM after market (estimated at less than $250). I'll add the SSD in maybe a couple of years once the price per gigabyte is a lot more reasonable. My configuration is as follows..
