According to the iphone dev teams new release of the 3gs jailbreak doesnt work on 3.1 out of the box phones. but im confused if that means it will work on upgraded phones or wont. how do i know im not going to destroy my phone because of a misunderstanding here.. very confused by their wording.

I got my iphone 3gs at launch, upgraded it to get MMS, will JB work?

If you're current firmware version is 3.1 and you're on a 3GS, there is no jailbreak available yet.
The 3.1 JB, is available if you're on JB 3.0, you can use pwnage tool to cook a 3.1 ipsw and restore to the cooked ipsw there by upgrading you to JB 3.1
Once you upgrade to 3.1, unless you saved your ECID to Cydia so you can downgrade, you'll have to wait to see when/if a tool gets released that will allow JB on devices running 3.1
they listed a process we had to do when the 3gs first came out if we wanted to be able to jb in the future.. i did that, i saved the file on my desktop somewhere ill have to go look for it later. so i just gotta hang onto that and wait right?
Yeah, unfortunately when that process came out about gathering the IB numbers, no one really knew how it was going to be incorporated into the JB, Saurik has said the numbers are pretty useless without a program to actually go and execute the numbers..
I know their was talk about a 3.1 JB (3GS users who upgraded to official 3.1 or out of box 3.1 devices) in the works, not sure if it involves the IB numbers that people had captured or not..
But, yes, for now you'll just have to be patient.
ok thank you very much for your help... makes sense now. i mean, the only things i really lked about the jb was backgrounder and the 5 icon dock.. i used to love to JB so i can use slingplayer anywhere on 3g but now that they make u give your credit card info for that im completely uncomfortable doing so.
Yeah, I'm whicha' on that, 99% of my JB intentions are strictly cosmetic, every now and again I like to switch up the look of the icons, dock, etc..
it looks like the iphone dev team has it working now on 3.1.2 or am i misreading their latest post?
