iPod I got struck by an ocean wave! warranty?

My 8GB iPod Nano 4th generation got soaked because I got struck by a large ocean wave as I was walking along the seashore. is this under warranty? my iPod turns on and shows up on my computer (only when it's plugged into a power source) but the backlight of the iPod doesnt work, so the screen is very dark. any suggestions? once again, is this under warranty?

You got water in it, therefore SOL. The only thing that may cover it is an Accident Policy from a retailer or your Homeowner's Insurance, but the deductible for the latter is usually more than the device.

I would like to know before going to the store, because the closest apple store is over an hour drive from where I live. not worth it to arrive at the Apple store and then be declined.

No, damage due to carelessness, which water damage always is, isn't covered by warranty. You will be declined, no doubt.

Well, it's more like if your brand new car hits a patch of black ice, or a deer jumps out in front of it while driving at night. Accidents happen, it's what insurance is for. Not the manufacturer's fault it was ruined.

Sorry, I doubt this would be covered under warranty. That's not to say the store might not by sympathetic, so ask anyway. Perhaps you could look into buying a splash-resistant case for next time.

The link below will show you exactly how Apple will check to see if your nano has been water damaged. You can do the check yourself before you make the decision to go.

If the liquid contact indicator is tripped, you have two options at the Apple Store:

1) The Genius Bar can replace it for a price cheaper than buying a new one. You can call the store in advance to see what the price is. It's usually not a huge savings.

2) You can buy a new iPod at the Apple Store and "recycle" your old one. By recycling it with them, they'll give you a 10% discount off the price of the new iPod you're buying.

If you decide on option 1, or you still want them to look at your nano to verify, remember to book an appt. for the Genius Bar before you go to the store. Option 2 doesn't require an appt.
