Here
I just started a new business
I bought a brand new mac G5
It came with the new operating system tiger or panther or something
I have need of several older applications (and games) that need "classic" environment to work.
Question
do I have to buy the old OS9 now to do this or is there a place for a novis like me to download "classic" for free free free.

I await a shout out from some esteamed mac guru who would lend an old pastor a hand.

Cheezy grin!
Kaz

Tiger does not have Classic natively i believe it is on the install disc that your computer came with.

Also OS 9 will not run natively on any modern mac, so do not buy OS 9 as it will not run.

From Apple:

"If you are installing from the Mac OS X Install discs, insert the "Additional Software & Apple Hardware Test" disc that came with your computer. Double-click "Install Additional Software."

and it is a G5? not the Intel iMac?
Apple again:
"Classic applications do not work on Intel processor-based Macs.
For best results using Mac OS X, upgrade your Mac OS 9 applications to a Mac OS X version. Check with the manufacturers for more information."

ok I was not completely honest when I said brand new... to me it is new.
it is brand new almost hardly used it was bought for me by my church and has been up and running for a year now the discs and all that are locked in the music and media office at the church about 30 miles away. sooooooo
I can't do diddley squat at this moment Huh?

Eva01 thank you for responding.
I am sorry you are ill is it something you would like an old pastor to pray with you about?

Your Welcome.

And I am not the religious type but thanks anyways.

However which OS do you have since it has been running for a year. if you click on the apple and go to "About This Mac" what does the version say 10.x.x?

No Classic environment on the Intel's, ey? What if I wanted to play 'A Mess 'O Trouble' or 'Unicycle' (awesome games)?

Oh well, I guess OS 9 support had to be phased out eventually...

Well, based on that recommendation I just downloaded Unicycle (v.2) but couldn't get it running. Classic would open and it would quit with an error message telling me the "moniter" [sic] had to be set to 256 colours. I'm bummed now.

sorry, should have been clearer, OS9 (Classic) should be available to install on your OSX discs, called "Additional Software". Classic won't be loaded as part of a normal X install but if you run the installer on that disc and it should give you the option to install Classic.

Sorry about not responding again last night but I was drawn away. By the way I am a Pastor of my church and I too am not the "Religious type." I think the bigest thing prevent God from making a huge difference in the lives of the people at the church are "the people at the church." Jesus was not into religion He was all about Love.

Back to my computer

it says

Mac OS X version 10.4
Dual 2.5 Ghz PowerPC G5
I GB DDR SDRAM

it is a fast and beautiful rocking out with a hula skirt mama jamma computer
I even sprung for dual 20 inch flat screen monitors! Zowie is it lovely!

it is a thing of beauty.Yes ... I like having the best and all, but and I say this in a serious if somewhat funny way "Could someone teach me to use it please."

Kaz,
Did you try installing Classic as described above? I have an iMac G5 also running Tiger (10.4.3) and have Classic installed for some old games as well. When you run the game, if Classic is not running it will start, or you can start it ahead of time. And I have run some games that require 256 color support; I just set the color depth to 8-bit (256) and they worked fine.

EDIT: I fully agree, Jesus was all about Love, not Religion. That is a term that we too often let get in the way of doing what He would want us to do. And what exactly does "Religious" mean anyway? You can be religious about anything.

About my mac, no I did not get my original disks back yet so when I do I will try to install them and come back here for help if I am to much of a tool to figure it out on my lonesome. Thanks

About "Religion" it actually comes from the word "ritual" which means a repeated action. Religion in people is about following rules and earning your way into favor from God. Jesus broke many rules. He was down on the religous type IE "brood of vipers" was his choice of names for them.
I tend to lean his way and departed from legalism like a bad habit (no pun intended) but I believe in prayer I just don't believe I can work my way into heaven, that work was finished for me.
Thanks for the thoughtful responce
Kaz
