In 2013 I got an Airport Time Capsule router with a built in 1 tb drive. Even then that was a joke size so I replaced the internal drive with a 8 tb drive so I can do time machine backups of my half dozen macs in the house.

I'm beginning to have network problems, websites that aren't working because of cache issues, using Airplay to a tv is super choppy even just a few meters away from the hub, etc. Is is possible to get a new third party router, then get an external housing for my 8tb drive, and have it plug in via usb, and continue to have all my machines be able to make their time machine backups? Is this even a thing? Thank you so much!
