I have been asking this question in other forums but I'm not getting direct or promising answer.

I'd like to know if Whatsapp is TOTALLY based on your phone number and your device, rather than an account created in the remote server??

I'm asking this question because I was once got "kicked" logged out of my Whatsapp because my phone number expired and used by other users but I forgot to update the number. Surprising, all chat history was there after I logged in with a new phone number.

Simply speaking, is it true that once I update a phone number and name in Whatsapp, other users won't be able to figure out who I am unless I tell them of if they know my new phone number?

Yes you are correct, whatsApp is based on your phone number, if you changed your phone number your contacts would be unable to contact you unless you updated your phone number in the application and also provided them your new phone number. The application however is backed up to iCloud and stores data locally on your device which is why the conversation history was still there.

Sorry just to ask to make sure things right

He, the new owner of my old phone number, registered or logged in Whatsapp on his device with my original phone number, my device was never stolen, could he retrieve any chat history on his device then? I believe that it won't, but I am not totally sure. Do you know?
