Stopped into my local AT&T (formerly Cingular) store yesterday to inquire about the iPhone, and the rep took my number and said she'd hold one for me and call me as soon as I can come in and pick it up. She said every rep there had a separate list of people to call.
Regardless, they open at 9am and I'll probably be there at 7. (I'm an idiot, I know)

If the management finds out, you will lose that hold. On top of that, come release day there is nothing saying that list will make a difference. I am willing to bet the management will be overseeing things.

But hey, if it works ... great! :D

I agree. I would hate to think that I am "safe" because I am on some kind of hold list when all of that could be voided once management gets involved.

Furthermore, assuming this is true, you just blew your cover as people from Apple read these forums and if they see that holds are being allowed for customers then they will send out an updated memo reitterating what the rules are and that pre-holds are not allowed.

If you really want a phone, you should operate under the assumption that the hold will be voided unless the ATT employee is a personal friend of yours.

Thus the part where I say I'll be there at 7am... but still, pretty sweet! I'm TOTALLY getting an iPhone! YES!

you won't get it from a store hold and that early in the morning on the 29th... i smell ******** coming from every direction:rolleyes:

Sheesh! The store opens at 9, I'm just going to show up at 7 to start a line... take it easy on me! but seriously, the lady was super nice about it. She said that they'll be getting plenty of them in too, so that there shouldn't be a problem. She sort of avoided answering how many specifically, and how big their lists were, but she seemed confident that they'd be able to meet the demand.

I have no problem waiting from 7am to 6pm... Thanks to Charles Bukowski's sweet sweet novels!

I was thinking of actually getting stinking drunk all night, and then just plop myself right down in front of the AT&T door as the sun comes up... horrible idea, really.

Here is how that list works:

The iPhone is available for sale on the 29th.

The morning of the 29th all these reps call the people on their lists so they can potentially get the comission.

People will get the phones first come first serve, nobody will be holding one of you. So unless you are one of the first people there, or they have too many to sell right away, you won't get one.

They never guaranteed you one, they simply said they would call you to come in and get one.

Don't get your hopes up.

I hope you're right because it's unfair for people who don't have "the hook up."

I agree, any "hold lists" are going to be tossed come the 29th. From what I've been reading in other threads and what I've been told by the store manager at the AT&T store here, AT&T has no control over anything iPhone related. Only management will have access to the iPhone stock. There is no pre-order and no hold lists. I take everything with a grain of salt at this point as there haven't been enough details to conclude anything other than June 29th, 6pm.

My advice, if you want get one on the 29th, get there early and pack a lunch.

Steve Jobs has sent an email to every AT&T store manager telling them that wait lists are no-nos.

Good luck with that hold. The only thing that's going to happen (my friend works for cingular) is that you won't get called. They've been clearing stuff up with reps all day.

He said many of the managers have been throwing the list away, and a few even called it their "**itlist", meaning you might go in saying you have one on "hold" to pickup and a crafty manager will tell you, they couldn't hold one, even though they have stock of them.

People who make $10/hr, enjoy messing with customers ;)

You know they drop at 6pm on the 29th, so maybe try and go a few hours early and buy one, if you are lucky!

What ever, you can always get it if not the next day, then the next week. People need to settle down, anyone who wants an iphone can have an iphone (if your in the United States of America)

I wouldn't be so sure. Have you tried getting a Wii lately? They're *still* hard to get. The iPhone hype is way bigger than the hype for the Wii was. I think they'll be sold out for a while. And don't believe any of that 3 million iPhones crap that BusinessWeek pulled out of their behinds. There's no way Apple was able to manufacture 3 million iPhones in the last month.

When I have my *held* iPhone in my hand on June 29th, all you naysayers will be the first to know! SO STOKED! IPHONE RULES!

Wow, this phone is so hyped up - I've never heard so much hype over a phone! I think apple is gonna shatter their marketshare prediction...

Apple does not operate like Nintendo. I don't think keeping up with the demand will be a problem, it never has before.

Without a deposit, you have a claim to absolutely nothing. If she didn't take any money from you, you are in the exact same position as every other average joe.

And why on earth would you put your name on a list to be called, if you plan to show up BEFORE the store opens? they're not going to be calling people until after 9, if they even do at all, at which time, you are already there and therefore, totally pointless.
