I've discovered an app called 'Arcahol' in the application folder of my MacBook Pro. I've never opened it.

From some brief research I've done, I found that this is malware and should be deleted. I've also read that another app called 'malware bytes' should she used to get rid of the Arcahol app.

Can anyone give me a trusted source to go to, to download software to allow me to delete this Arcahol app properly

BTW I'm using a mid 2012 13" MacBook Pro running macOS 10.12.5

Many thanks....

The link to Malwarebytes for Mac is below. Malwarebytes is a legitimate malware remover and is safe to use. You should click on the 'Free Download' link. I have no idea whether it wil remove Arcahol specifically, but its a good place to start.

OK, so I've downloaded and ran Malwarebytes which showed up a load of Arcahol related files etc. which I've now deleted.

One more quick question.....

I use Carbon Copy Cloner to make a bootable back up to portable hard drive. I've had a look and this second hard drive and with it being a clone, obviously it too has Arcahol in the applications folder.

It is good enough to connect my backup clone HD and run CCC to make a clone of the current (Arcahol free) MacBook Pro's HD......or should I run CCC to clone my primary HD which now has the Malwarebytes app. on it and then boot from the clone HD to run Malwarebytes to get rid of all the Arcahol stuff?? (I hope this makes sense!)

Thanks,
S65

Personally, I'd erase (format) the backup drive and just re-run CCC to clone my now clean SSD from scratch. That way you can be sure that there's no trace of Arcahol files left on the backup due to CCCs 'safety net' feature.

Alternatively if you want to save some time on the CCC, turn off the 'safety net' feature and then update the CCC backup without the format. It'll be quicker but the format/reclone option above is still the preferred option imo.

Thanks for the reply. I'm doing as you suggested and currently waiting for the erase / reformat to complete......
