I am not a power computer user, all I do is browse online, google docs and importing of pics and resizing in MS Paint(is there something similar for Chromebooks?). I picked up a Toshiba Chromebook off craigslist for $50 and it is really great. It looks like Macbook Air and has a nice keyboard, a backlight would be nice but cant complain for the price. The battery life is really good. I think a computer like this would be more than sufficient for most people. I really like how you can add different accounts and switch between them very fast. If you need to restore it is is a very fast process, I am not sure why my kid's school doesnt use these instead of Macbook Air's.

I work for a large bank (all IT stuff is totally locked down) that lets employees work from home by remotely logging into our PCs at the office (using our personal Windows or Mac PC at home). Question for Chromebook users: could I use a CB to do this? I need java to work to access the bank's remote access website. Also it would be totally impossible for me to install any Chrome remote access software on the work PC. Anyone know?

Not everything on a ChromeBook is a Chrome extension and why would Java not work?

It's not that simple. There may be specific requirements for that remote access that are not supported by ChromeOS.
That kind of remote-from-home access often has very specific requirements. Check with your IT dept to see if they (A) support remote access via a Chromebook and if so (B) which Chromebooks do they recommend.
Depending upon the remote access method used, some Chromebooks work better. Here where I work the remote access software we use has been optimized for use with the Acer w/Tegra K1 Chromebook. (other Chromebooks work, but that particular Acer works extremely well)
If they haven't an official position on Chromebooks then, the only way to know for sure is to test remote access (and the major functions you'd perform) on a Chromebook itself.

My problem with Chromebooks (aside from Google's infamous fickleness) is that usually the screens are total junk, like 250 nits and 58% sRGB gamut, which is a tough pill to swallow when you're used to an iPad Air. The Toshiba was a noted exception.
Even the new Acer R13 doesn't get a great review (for the screen). What are my options? Find a used Toshiba?

Yeah, that's an option, but even the 2013 model are going for $500 on eBay, about $100 more than I would spend.
Because it kinda is a desktop OS..I run Chrome OS and Ubuntu with crouton at the same time and there are no slowdowns on either OS.
My interest in Chromebooks have steadily grown in the past year. I'll definitely be keeping a close eye on what they come out with in the next year or so.
I'm waiting on the Samsung Pro Chromebook. The leaks look impressive, but I haven't heard anything about a release date at this point.
