So i have a Playstation 3 that is hard wired into my network.....i have an account on there that allows me to download movies and tv shows. Aside from being able to stream my media from iTunes is there any other cool stuff that apple tv does that my ps3 wouldn't do? I am just trying to justify spending the money on it if i have something that will do similar things. I guess this doesn't change the fact that i want one really bad haha!

PS3 is even a better media streamer for home theater. With certain apps (Windows or Mac) you could stream any video format into it.

Granted, PSN movie and music library is total suck compared to iTunes (PSN is a 90% games store anyway), and Apple TV consume less energy than PS3, but the hassle of downloading content and only play Apple exclusive movie/music format on it is a let-down. No HDD, no optical drive (yes, optical .. something Apple fanboys would hate because Steve said so)

Plus, your PS3 has built in bluray player .. That's 10x better than iTunes' so-called HD movies, better resolution, clarity, superb sound and all. Nothing can beat the physical media quality yet unless today's home internet can download or stream 50GB of data under 2 hours. iTunes' movies is no more than MKV files you found on torrent, bundled with :apple: logo on it, and called as legal movies :D

Really, no reason for buy Apple TV if you already have ps3. iPad video stream to HDTV .. 99% gimmick. Although this is a Mac forum, and I'm a Mac user, still I'd like to keep things objective.

Wow, thanks a lot!! That actually helped me out. I really wish iTunes would bump up to 1080p. The only other thing about blu ray is that's it's so expensive to buy them. I would like to be able to download or rent them through the apple tv and have the same quality, oh well I guess I'll wait for that day....are the hd shows and movies you can rent through apple tv 720p?

blu-rays are expensive???? This is not 2007 you know. They are as cheap as DVDs now

Ps3 in living room, ATV 2 in bedroom. but I cheated and put a blu ray player in the bedroom too.....

i like the interface of the Apple TV more, just for the sake of simplicity, and I've never really used my PS3 for anything besides just games/blu rays. I know my PS3 can do a lot more than i do with it, so if you've already got the PS3, save the $100 for something else.

I own a PS3 and an TV for each of my 2 rooms in my condo.

TV is the perfect solution for anyone who has a large media collection stored in iTunes, or wants to utilize Airplay features from iOS.

If this is not you, then the PS3 is more than adequate.

YMMV.

They both serve their purpose. I have over 200 movies in itunes and it's nice to scroll them on the apple tv with full cover art and descriptions. I think movies are cheaper on the apple tv but on the ps3, you can stream full 1080p movies with vudu. Another good thing about the ps3 is that you can also access hulu in 720p. With that being said, they both have their pros and cons. I personally have 4 apple tvs and 3 ps3s in my house. I mainly use the ps3s for gaming and watching 3D blu rays. The apple tvs are used for watching movies with itunes and also as a multi room audio system for parties.

We bought a PS3 last summer for the living room. Using YouTube and net surfing was very frustrating as it was difficult to position the cursor where we wanted it. Two trips to the Sony store to troubleshoot and both times the staff there admitted the UI was not very friendly.
Bought the AppleTV last winter for the basement mancave and we were seriously considering getting another for the living room. Setup was much easier than the PS3 and keying in searches MUCH easier .However now I can stream from my iPad via the cable or use wifi to stream musical content from my puter to our sound bar.
Weeks go by when the PS3 isn't turned on as we only have a handful of BluRay disks. (But I WOULD like to get back into Red Dead Redempion!)

"iPad video stream to HDTV .. 99% gimmick. " Not sure how objective that is , and personally I couldn't disagree more. My husband is a riding instructor; I video lessons on the iPad , we can play back and point out mistakes then and there to the pupil who can repeat the exercise, finish the lesson, go back to the house for a cold drink and a playback on our 52" screen . Pupil is thrilled.
Not a gimmick from our point of view.

I like the ability to stream videos and such from my iPhone or iPad to my TV. I can't do that with my PS3.

This is the main reason i bought atv 2 even though i have an PS3. And also you can stream music to your receiver without switching on TV and control the playlist from iphone/ipad.

Oh, its not?!?! dang, i guess i better catch up then. I work for Best Buy so i know the prices of blu ray movies. I just want to try and get past having racks and towers of movies and would rather download or rent them in full 1080P. Thats all i was saying....

I think I'm still gonna get it though. :)

That's why they are so expensive, you're buying them from Best Buy.

To be fair, Best Buy Over inflates Thier prices by 45%, so you are not getting the best price at best Buy.

You would do better to purchase from a different Distributor even if you do work for them.

For some reason the Logic of this has went by the way-side.

Where do you guys buy blu-ray movies? I mean, our discount is 5% above cost and we still don't get that much off of blu ray movies. So, is the supplier that best buy buying from jacking up the prices? I guess I'm confused.....
