I'm curious to know what happens here. I've never used Apple Music but, I want to give it a shot. Since my original iPod, I've only downloaded music and stored it on my phone. What's the best process to use AM while not messing up my current library? for example, my genres are broken into 4 main categories, not "alternative rock", just "rock". Will Apple match these songs and override the metadata, or what should I expect?

The best method is to start with a blank library. This will be easy on a Mac or a PC, not iPhone. On a Mac, create a new blank library. Subscribe to Apple Music there. Don’t let it scan your library even though it’s empty just to be sure. Turns on Sync Library and starts to drag your albums or playlists “one by one” to this new library. Once an album is added to Music it will try to match it and present you with choices it think the best match. If it doesn‘t find a match it will upload (everything including metadata) to Apple Music. That’s way your music will stay the way you arranged it.

Your songs will not be touched. There are two tabs in Apple Music. One is "Apple Music" and the other is "your library". Anything that you own will be found in "Your library".

That’s not true. If you let Apple Music scan your library it will try to match everything and it can make a mess.

Nonsense. I have 600 albums in my library in addition to what I've added with Apple Music. It's all fine.

Uh, so i'm not sure what happened. I grabbed my old iphone and turned on sync. All the songs appeared on my new iphone, but I was not able to download them . It's asking me to go to my mac and select Sync library. I went and did that, and it still shows me the songs with the icon of a cloud and "!" icon on it. I went ahead and TURNED off sync from all my devices, and my new iphone still shows me the songs and I can't download, or delete them.

What do I do here? how do I remove all the songs and just keep what I downloaded from Apple Music?

I thought that with Apple Music I could just turn on syn on my old iPhone and it will sync and match all the songs. Is that not the case?

Do I need to:
Re-upload my library from a backup to my new laptop, sync my iphone to this laptop and sync my library, then moving forward just add songs via Apple music?

I’m not sure about your situation but it’s either it scanned your library and you’re lucky it matched everything perfectly, or your whole library is not entirely in Apple Music and it’s not the same on every devices because if you let Apple Music scan yours one thing is sure: your songs will be *touched*.

Turns on Sync Library on all your devices. Restarting everyone of them.

I did. I have my old iphone and my new iphone. I turn both on to sync and nothing. The NEW iphone shows the songs, but WONT let me download them. it says I need to sync them from my macbook. Which, has zero songs and is logged out from my icloud.

Then I log out of my OLD iphone, log back into my new one, turn on apple music and boom, those placeholders appear again.

What am i doing wrong?

Try turning off Apple Music and turning it back on. Check you logging in to the correct Apple ID as well.

Yup. Did/done that. I log back in and its all there. I log out of my old phone and they STILL appear on the new one. I should have just not used it and listened to everyone.
