Well I was certain I knew the answer for this until an earlier post on here today.

I am going to buy an iphone tomorrow, I knew that I could not sim unlock the phone, however this doesnt interest me at all. However I would like to be able to software unlock the phone. I have been under the impression that you cannot software unlock a 1.1.2 phone unless it was upgraded to that. The out of the box 1.1.2 phones have the new bios and as of now you cant do anything with them. A few posts on here earlier suggested that I could jailbreak my new phone no matter the stock firmware.

Can someone knowledgable please clear this up for me.

iPhones OTB 1.1.2
Unlock = No
Jailbreak = Yes

iPhones Upgraded 1.1.2
Unlock = Possible (if the process won't screw up)
Jailbreak = Yes, defenitly

So yes, you can easily jailbreak and install applications on your new OTB 1.1.2 iPhone. However, remember all the warnings, you do this at your own risk.

Edit - here is a link to a Guide in these forums you can try https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/388281/

thanks for the reply.. i am leaving to pick up my phone here in about 10 minutes :D

i had studied that link you posted for over a week now and I could probably quote it to you by memory at this point. the reason I had to ask this noob question is
1. i am taking this risk and want to check all possibilities before hand
2. the quote in the guide that said
* Please note, before you start this know what firmware you phone came with!!! If it came with 1.1.2 OTB then there is a really good chance (if not 100%) that you cannot unlock your phone. Please take time to research whether or not your phone can be successfully jailbroken and/or unlocked.

i wasnt 100% sure what that meant to me exactly so I wanted to clear it up first hand.

I am not worried about missing a step and bricking my phone, I am only worried that the software wouldnt work and brick the phone. I have been hacking and downgrading and customizing PSP's for a long time now so I am very familiar with the typical downgrading/reupgrading process and how closely you need to read the instructions.

I may not jail break mine imediately, but within a short amount of time (basically as soon as I realize there is a program I want that I cant run) it will end up being jailbroken.

thanks again for your answer!

I wouldn't risk putting apps on my iPhone/iPod touch now I'd wait a couple of months for the SDK.

yeah I am not super worried about doing this right off hand.. there are plenty of really cool applications and tech features on the iphone alone to keep me interested for a few months.

if I run into programs that I just cant get unless I jailbreak it then I will probably cross that bridge. Only time will tell.
