Maybe Apple's position on third parties modifying their sacred IPhone OS is pretty cut and dry, but hopefully they've at least got a close eye on things like this forum and the jailbreaking/developer community at large.

My 3GS has been jailbroken for several months, and I'm always reading and trying out some amazing bits of software that make the device better to use all the time.

No one (including Apple) can deny that there's some brilliant stuff out there, and I'm not just talking about the flashy mods and gimmicky themes. There's so many jailbreak apps (tons of which are discussed right here) that endlessly improve the core functionality of the OS; examples, backgrounder, winterboard, sbsettings, realquicksms, lockinfo, just to name a quick few. These seem like no brainers that should be part of the official OS.

At the very least, I hope Apple is taking some cues from the developer community as they add and change features to future software updates. Do they look at the hacking of their OS as a simple black and white criminal issue, or could they be looking deeper at some of the reasons people decide to jailbreak their devices, and molding their software to satisfy their users' wants and needs? Sure the means is unconventional, but they could see the results of the development community's work and the positive response of the end user to that work as a kind of market research.

On the other hand, I wouldn't be a bit surprised if great features like these and more are shut out forever, given Apple's petty and elitest track record towards developers and customers.

What does anyone think of the chances of some of these awesome jb-only features going legit in future versions of IPhone OS?

What jailbreak features do you want to see built into future devices OTB??

I think they do pay some attention to jailbreaking and forums. I am sure that things like lockinfo and maybe their personal multi tasking program will be in 4.0. Thats the iphones biggest downfall is not being able to multi task like some other phones out there. Apple always holds their newest things better than the CIA and we will have to wait and see. I would like to see multi tasking and lockinfo released because it makes the iphone work like it should.

I just don't think Apple cares to take queues from the jb community, sadly. They should though.

Sadly, I agree. Much of their anti-jailbreaking position seems to be based on knowing what their customers want better than their customers do.

I am sure there will be some nice enhancements for the next generation of OS
But I am equally sure it fall short of user expectations and demands

Some of that will be due to Apple's desire for overall consistency in their vision of the user experience regarding performance and features

But no doubt some will be due to their desire to do things their way

They added allowed developers to puts app on the iphone after Jailbreakers were already doing it, they added a search function after Jailbreakers were already doing it, now, on the iPad, they added wallpaper behind the icons after Jailbreakers were and still are doing it, didn't they?

They have learned a lot from what we have been doing, because thats what people want. Now multitasking will most likely come next, LockInfo, maybe, and iRealQuickSMS, I don't think we'll see that for a while. But they are noticing what their customers want, and I think myself and other people who have a Jailbroken device, are a big influence on them.

Correlation != causation.

Yea you're right about those few features being added, but their own evolutionary curve seems sooo much slower than that of the jailbreak community that I'm not convinced that Apple's not just following the original roadmap they've had since day one, before jailbreaking was a twinkle in anyone's eye. It's not like they saw the jb apps popping up and then decided to release they're official SDK and open an app store, for example.

If they are in fact taking leads from jb users and developers, I wish they'd pick up the pace instead of giving us this trickle of new features every several months.

There's no doubt they're noticing why people jb their iPhones and look into the most popular jb packages installed. Then perfect them and include them on their official os. Anyone remember clippy? Shortly after Apple introduced cut, copy paste not far off from it and many other improvements that came with 3.0+
