Maybe Apple's position on third parties modifying their sacred IPhone OS is pretty cut and dry, but hopefully they've at least got a close eye on things like this forum and the jailbreaking/developer community at large.
My 3GS has been jailbroken for several months, and I'm always reading and trying out some amazing bits of software that make the device better to use all the time.
No one (including Apple) can deny that there's some brilliant stuff out there, and I'm not just talking about the flashy mods and gimmicky themes. There's so many jailbreak apps (tons of which are discussed right here) that endlessly improve the core functionality of the OS; examples, backgrounder, winterboard, sbsettings, realquicksms, lockinfo, just to name a quick few. These seem like no brainers that should be part of the official OS.
At the very least, I hope Apple is taking some cues from the developer community as they add and change features to future software updates. Do they look at the hacking of their OS as a simple black and white criminal issue, or could they be looking deeper at some of the reasons people decide to jailbreak their devices, and molding their software to satisfy their users' wants and needs? Sure the means is unconventional, but they could see the results of the development community's work and the positive response of the end user to that work as a kind of market research.
On the other hand, I wouldn't be a bit surprised if great features like these and more are shut out forever, given Apple's petty and elitest track record towards developers and customers.
What does anyone think of the chances of some of these awesome jb-only features going legit in future versions of IPhone OS?
What jailbreak features do you want to see built into future devices OTB??
