So here is what I want. Lots of TB to hold all my BR media and music for my popcorn hour. I'd like to have control via my iMac. I would like to somehow share all this over my network. I want it to be easily readable and not broken down over multiple storage devices. If i were to set up a server with 4 different drives, i want them to be seen as one entire storage. Is this possible?I have no idea on how to do this. If you respond please dumb it down for me. I'm not all that good with this stuff. Btw, don't know how to set up a server and have a g5 sitting around doing nothing.

I believe a Drobo from Data Robotics would suit your needs best. I don't have experience with it (am looking into getting one in the near future), but from what I've read, it has continuously upgradable storage up to (I believe) a maximum of 8TB, and this can be formatted to appear as one disk image, should you desire.

Hi,

Yeah, from what I've read the Drobo is a great choice for your storage needs. Drives can be upgraded on the fly when needed, your files are protected and it apparently very reliable.

http://www.drobo.com/products/drobo.php and watch the product video explaining all the features/functions.

Hope this helps!

yeah the drobo is pretty much exactly what I need but when all said and done its like over 800$! I got to be able to do it for cheaper.

How much storage are you exactly needing?

Installing several drives in an enclosure and making them "one drive" is called RAID 0. There are some major things to consider for RAID 0. Google it to get some more info.

I own a couple of different media storage drives. One is a firewire 400-attached 2 x 1tb (2tb RAID 0) that has been running just fine for three years or so. The other large drive I use is a NAS (one of the Western Digital ones) that is a 2 x 1tb (2tb RAID 0) that is attached to my router. This runs all the time, has sleep mode, and does quite well. It has been going great for almost two years.

The media I have on the attached drive is roughly 500 DVD rips.

My NAS backs all that up (for the time being).

To be honest with you, you are going to have to have an insanely fast network connection in order to share BR rips to your Popcorn Hour over a wired ethernet connection.

Really, my best advice would be to start with a small drive and see how this works for you in your setup. Test it all out to see how it will work in the grand scheme of things, especially before you go out and spend 500-600 dollars on building yourself an 8tb array, which is possible.

tHERE'S A LOT OF HELP HERE: http://www.123macmini.com/

JUST START SEARCHING!!!!

Are you trying to suggest to the OP that buying a Mac Mini will solve his/her issues they've written about?

They already own a Popcorn Hour and are looking for storage solutions. Sounds like a step backward to me.

EDIT: to the OP, I meant earlier to tell you to think about selling your G5 if you are unfamiliar with server configurations.
