Just came back from visiting my parents in Florida. Both mom and dad are in their late 80's and bed ridden in Hospice care. I got mom an iPad 6 some years back and an iPad 9 and iPhone SE2 a couple years ago. She had never used a computer or smartphone before and she took right to the iPad and iPhone. They both gave her new found joy having access to the world, friends, and family at her fingertips.

Mom is in hospice now, very weak, can’t see well, and the iPad is now too heavy for her to hold and use. She still is able to answer her iPhone but not much else. Her iPad was sitting in a stack of books not being used, so I brought it home with me.

I have an M1 iPad Pro 11 that I use as my laptop replacement. Now I need to figure out what to use this iPad 9 for. I have factory reset it, set it up with a new Apple ID, and updated to iPad OS 18.2. It looks brand new and is in the case I got for it when I got the iPad for mom. I will not be giving it away, selling it, or trading it in. It will be used by my wife or myself until it no longer updates or works anymore, and then it will sit in the closet and collect dust. I believe the iPad 9 has several more good years to go, so I'd like to get some use out of it. I am in the process of tweaking the settings to my liking, customizing the home screens, and installing some apps. Any suggestions?

I used an old iPad that I had given my dad as a picture frame to view old pictures of my parents who are no longer around.
Sounds like a great idea for an old iPad that doesn’t update anymore but this iPad 9 is current for at least a few more years. I want to use it for more than a picture frame. Thanks for the input though.👍🏻

You could use it as a Smart Home hub. Kind of like an Echo Show. I’ve seen several people use older iPad’s this way before, you usually can get wall mounted cases for them. 👍🏻. And the nice thing is that an iPad is far more capable and flexible than an Echo Show. You can configure the Home Screen with a collection of smart home widgets and Siri Shortcuts. 👍🏻

Still a good iPad and can handle most things you throw at it. If your wife don't have a dedicated iPad it might be a good thing to give it to her.
Don't think there's much tweaking needed for that model to get it up to speed.

I usually disable transparency and use a single colour background.

Yeah, I was thinking it might make a good kitchen computer for recipes, looking things up, checking emails, maybe watching a movie/youtube. Unfortunately, I don't have a very smart home.🤭 Thanks for the input!😊

Yeah, when I got home from Florida, I offered it to her and she declined. I updated to 18.2 and it is running really nice. Spending some time setting it up now. I am anal about customizing my devices, so I'll spend some time with that. Thanks for the input RB!😊

@bondr006 I am sorry to hear about your parents.

I also have an ipad 9 that is currently not in use. Initially bought it for my mom when she was resting at home after a major illness, but she never really got the hang of using touchscreen devices (that and the medication she takes gives her hands massive tremors). It's also currently updated to iOS 18.2, but otherwise just kinda rests on a stand and gets charged every once in a while.

I did use it for a short period of time while my 2018 iPad Pro was getting a battery replacement, and performance was actually pretty good. It's just a little slower in everything, but otherwise runs apps like notability and slay the spire just fine. I also quite liked the curved back nicer to hold), touch ID is still very useable and I still don't mind the charging mechanism behind the 1st gen Apple Pencil where you plug it into the lightning port.

I do suspect that the iPad 9 will not get iOS 19, but I guess it will still be good around the house for the basic stuff like streaming YouTube and light gaming?

Yeah, I'm finding as I set it up and use it that it runs really nice on 18.2. No jitters or lags so far. I still have a ways to go installing apps and tweaking the settings but...so far so good. I am pretty sure it 's going to end up in the kitchen. Most used room in the house, and I love cooking. Be a very nice little device to have in the kitchen for many uses. Right now I'm using a Samsung Chromebook in the kitchen and I hate it.

I'm pretty sure that iPad 9 will get iPad OS 19, and probably 20. If it doesn't get 19, neither will iPad 7 or 8 that are both compatible with 18....as noted below.

I think that’s the perfect use for a secondary iPad! 👍🏻. You can use it for recipes, playing some music while you cook, etc. 👍🏻. I’ve used a 15” echo show, and I think I would much rather use an iPad as a smart-display than the Show. The Show is ok, but extremely limited, in a way beyond what I expected. There are so few widget options with an Echo Show, I was surprised at how hard it was to actually make that 15” screen feel useful…

I agree. I have the MS Wedge Mobile keyboard which is perfect for it. If I want to listen to music or YouTube…I have a JBL Flip6 for some good sound. I think I’m good to go for kitchen duties. The iPad 9 is so much faster and easier to use than the Samsung Chromebook I’m using in the kitchen now.🤢

I own an iPad 8th generation with Logitech slim folio keyboard, it’s more than enough for me. Although, my next iPad will be a 13 inch iPad Pro with Magic Keyboard. I think I can get by without my MacBook Air. Should have bought the iPad pro last year instead of my MacBook Air. I use my iPad way more than my MacBook Air.

All set up for kitchen duty. Copied all my recipes over, installed all the necessary entertainment apps, have a JBL Flip 6 for sound, and MS Wedge Mobile keyboard and Logitech Ultrathin Touch Mouse T630 for input. So much nicer than the Samsung Chromebook I had there🤢
