My i7 was delivered the other day, no problems whatsoever. I haven't turned it off in 72 hours and it hasn't done anything wrong.
Wish the GPU was better but other than that I'm loving it (my first Mac as well).
Got the i7 for £1550 from the Apple store, only 500 pound more than my last windows laptop and it's completely worth the extra pennies.

I have noticed a large number of i7 owners are also first time Mac owners - I wonder if Apple finally made the hardware that was too good to pass up or if its just that time in the cycle where people are buying new hardware and those that have been thinking about a Mac have finally taken the plunge?
I am a first time Mac owner as well with the i7 and I love this machine, it is my favorite computer that I have ever owned/used.

Good to hear. People do seem drawn to the imacs. Maybe it fills of void for people who still want a desktop. Desktop sales are dying off so much, but people realize iMacs are still an amazing solution. Indeed, I think, they provide a much better experience than a portable.
Finally, I think you'll find any new Mac you buy is going to feel like your favorite computer. They really are satisfying purchases.
i havn't opened it yet because i am currently moving in new furniture to my place. but i WILL definitely post pics when i have everything set up. i also bought a wall mount for it =D oooo yeaaaaah the mount was a steal!! regular price $150. CLEARANCE PRICE TEN BUCKS!!

To go from XP to Windows 7, you need new hardware and you need to start from scratch , loading software and re-do all your settings. Going from Vista to Windows 7 is almost as bad. A lot of people are thinking if they have to get new hardware and re-install software, they might as well take the opportunity to switch to Apple. - Just my thoughts on the matter.

Oh come on.....
1. XP is still fully supported by Microsoft. Just no longer available to purchase. Some functionality has even been backported. Hence why Office 2010 will work on XP.
2. 7 runs as well as XP on a netbook, so you don't need a new computer. Most PCs that run XP will run 7, with perhaps just a ram upgrade required. Any Vista PC will require no upgrade. Vista can do an in place OS upgrade (but I wouldn't recommend it hence point 3)
3. Going to any new OS, it is recommended to clean install. Leopard to Snow Leopard? Apple say upgrade, experience has taught MR users to recommend a clean install.
4. Windows has backwards compatibility going back over a decade. Most 32 bit apps that worked on Windows '95 will work with 7. Therefore most applications will not need upgrading, ergo new software in 99% of cases not requried.
Now I'm a mainly Apple user, and have been for a while (I just retired my Power Mac G4), but I have to disagree with your views.
My feeling is that the iMac 27" is just one hell of a desirable computer, and the quad core is what a lot of switchers were waiting for.
In response to the part of your post that I highlighted, you could've fooled me. You certainly defended Windows XP/Vista and 7 as if you're a fanboy. Secondly, that poster you replied to, you missed his point. It's not about Windows 7 requiring more powerful hardware, thus switching to a Mac would be the answer. Is this your reasoning for mentioning W7 being installed on a netbook? If so, you're off track here. The point is if you have to do a clean install anyway, if your hardware is older, if you're getting a bit sick of Windows, and since Apple's computers are seen in the hands of many people now, it might be a good time to try out a Mac. The 27" iMacs are quite intriguing to many and this is a good time for Apple to grab those people that are looking to buy a new computer, rather than settling with another PC running Windows, an iMac and Snow Leopard might be a refreshing change for a lot of people.

I don't think I missed the point here. He stated it was an explicit NEED for new hardware. It isn't. Most XP users are reasonably happy with XP (unlike most Vista users who would like to chuck their computer out of the window - why do you think the Get a Mac adverts specifically targeted Vista for the most part) and so if they're happy in these austere times and need new hardware to run 7, they won't bother. I stand by my assertion that iMac sales are because Apple is making a compelling product.

I own 1 Windows PC. I have to. Because the software I use for work is windows (I occasionally work from home), and I have now made the decision that I won't run Boot Camp or virtualise any OS on my macs. The exception being one of the MacBooks that my better half uses because the Garmin Training Centre package for the Mac used to suck. She is currently running the new Mac version in tandem with the Windows version to make sure she is 100% happy before Windows is removed from that MB.
Windows has improved and upped their game. However it still has its disadvantages (the registry and the need to run AV being the worst). But MS upping their game can only mean good for everyone. For Windows users, they are getting a better product than they had. For Apple users, Windows upping the game, encourages more innovation by Apple, to make sure they stay well ahead.
I'm a 15+ yr PC user and I've been reading up on the iMac for the last 6-8 months. I was about to pull the trigger on an i7 27" with all the bells and whistles, but have held off after reading of all the defective screens being returned. Whats worse is that after spending thousands, these poor consumers receive replacements with the same problems and sometimes additional ones!!! WTF?
Anyway, I need a high power machine and the i7 with all the trimmings is what I'd ideally like to purchase IF this ever gets resolved properly.
Well, I certainly didn't say, neither did I insinuate that you were making up lies about what Windows was capable of. In fact, what you said, to my knowledge was all true. Understand something here, maybe it's just me, but I get a little concerned here when (not all of this is you) I see people on a Mac forum"seemingly" defend Windows (this part was you) and post all the great things about it. Nothing exactly wrong with that, although you probably won't see as much praise and positive facts presented about the Mac OS on a Windows forum, but these same people will highly criticize the Mac and the Mac OS as if Apple has committed a felony by releasing it. Sorry, it's just my radar turned on high because these same people "appear" to be Mac users but troll the forum against Macs. So, your point was well taken.
Good for you, at least someone on this forum is reading the posts and learning. Seemingly everyday there's a new post about someone who thinks they are immune to getting a bad machine, but post that they got bad one as well even though they read about all the problems. The forum is no good if people don't learn from it. It's always best to buy Rev B when it comes to Apple's products. Being "first kid on the block" is another word for Beta Tester.

Nice back pedaling on that one dan, but I think I can still see your foot in your mouth. CJ made some correct observations about necessary hardware upgrades concerning Windows and now he is acting like an MS fanboy? Sounds like you need to turn your sensors down. The amount of pro-Apple trolling here astounds me, it's worse than the other camp. If you really were a fan of people reading posts and learning from them like you say, you should of had no beef with cj. Should we only be learning good things about Apple and bad things about MS?

27" Quad core iMac is my first Mac as well! I think the reason I switched was that my roommate has a macbook and she loves it.
I have always had monster gaming laptops due to my gaming addiction and my travel. I told myself that for security sake and to avoid viruses on my gaming machine I wanted a computer that was secure and works well. Got tired of the crap from Vista.
Once I unboxed that baby and wiped the drool off of my chin I have barely turned on my gaming machine. The iMac serves my gaming needs quite well ( World of Warcraft). It was my first desktop purchase in over 10 years and I don't regret it. It is beautiful. Works well and the screen is amazing.
now my roommate is jealous and wants to get one soon haha!

Ha ha, foot in my mouth? You're way off. Firstly, nobody on this forum could ever make me feel like I have to apologize for anything I've said. Secondly, I stand by what I said, I never accused him of lying about what he said about Windows, which IS what he said I did. Thirdly, I think YOU'RE the one with a beef with me, unlike you I don't go out of my way to rub shoulders. You keep trying very hard to pick a fight with me when I wasn't at all discussing anything with you. Why don't knock that chip off your shoulder? You may need somebody's help someday and your posts are coming across as a person who wants to create enemies.

I'm kind of in the same boat. I just got my first mac(i5) after messing around with my roommates macbook for a while. I'm not a gamer, though. I just wanted the mac for stability, OS, and simplicity.
I'm in the exact same position.. have been waiting for the next iMac / reading about them for a year now, wanting to make the switch from Windows and have the transition be as perfect as everyone says it is. Now that the beautiful 27" i7s are finally here, I have been scared out of it with all the horror stories:
- "Never buy Rev A"
- Display flickering
- Display still flickering after firmware upgrade
- Yellow tinge supposedly a hardware issue, not software
I suppose your thoughts on the matter are the answer I've been looking for to help decide whether to take the risk or not, but I can't say I like it - I'm so sick of waiting! My current PC is OKAY. Buggy and annoying me as usual, but still okay. I don't NEED an iMac right now, but I WANT one right now! So really it comes down to this..
I know Apple never tells anyone anything, but what is the general MR consensus on the approximate period between Rev A and Rev B releases? Are we talking like 2 or 3 months, 6 months.. more?
Any light anyone can shed would be most helpful..
