I just got an iPhone, now what?

Hey all...

so, today my cousin is going out of the country, and he gave me his iPhone! :D
it's a 1st Gen iPhone (8GB)... I know it's kinda old... but, I do like the design! ;)
well... he had it jailbroken (the 'installer' one, not 'cydia')... and it's still on 1.1.4
I'm downloading 3.0 as I write... so what should I do?
I want to unlock it but NOT jailbrake it... what I mean is I want to use it for any carrier, but I don't want the 'installer' / 'cydia' / etc, installed....
what's my best solution?

P.S. by updating to 3.0 will the Installer App be deleted? (thats what i want)

restore with itunes to 3.0 then use RedSn0w to unlock, when you do that only check the Unlock box.. the you will need 3.9 and 4. something bootloaders, you can find them on iclarify. search google and download those..its simple. yes everything will be deleted. salam alekom hehe

I'm doing that right now... I'll let you know bout the results!


p.s. but if i don't install cydia it'll unlock anyway, right? coz i like iphone just as it is (with all the 280 apps downloaded from the appstore!)

Yes sir. the option to not install cydia is made like that should you ever need to use the warranty at an apple store.
 
Well first of all, is your cousin going to be getting the iphone back, or is it yours to keep? If you will be giving it back to him, don't upgrade to 3.0 until you ask him if it's alright
 
I would say he gave it to him for keeps, he will probably buy a new one because he is going out of the country..
 
yep, he gave it for me to keep ;)

btw, i just finished downloading and installing 3.0

i'll start the redsn0w process after i get sure of one more thing... i know i might sound dumb but here it goes... should i have the SIM inserted while i do redsn0w?

Any apps? Hehe.. I have about 280 Apps! It's because I use to own an iPod touch (1st gen) but it got stolen 7 months ago! But well... I got the iPhone and I'm extremely happy with it! And btw, I'm getting spoiled by that cousin of mine! Coz he just sent me a big Sound Dock w/ fm radio!!!
 
So, I downloaded today iPhone OS 3.1....
is it safe to upgrade from OS 3.0?!?!
remember I'm on a 1st Gen iPhone...
do I do the same process I did to Unlock (not JB) OS 3.0??

I don't think there's a way to unlock or j/b yet. That's the reason I haven't upgraded to 3.1. Plus people having issues. I would just wait til the dev team figures it out.

Thanks unspoken demise. I did have that but when I went to preview it it didn't showed the picture. And the code was from my photobucket which I regularly get the pics from album, weird.

I'm f***ed up guyz!!!!!!! my cousin went all "know-it-all" and told me he could do it... i told him we should wait for the dev team (like ive heard from everyone).... he went and took my iphone w/o me noticing and thought he was going to make it work.....
well, guess what he did?!?! he updated to 3.1 :eek::eek::eek: thinking that he'll be able to unlock it, AFTER he does that!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! AHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!

There are several threads in this forum that tell you how to downgrade back to 3.0. This is not possible to do if you have a 3GS, but I'm pretty sure it works with the 2G. Here is one link for example. Just do a search of browse through the iPhone Hacks forum and you'll see plenty of answers for you. Hopefully it's not too late and you haven't killed your cousin yet.
