I just got a new macbook which was exactly as I expected it to be. But at the same time I had to send my intel mini to the apple store to be fixed. I just got the mini back and realized how much I prefer the mini to the macbook. I don't know quite what it is but I just really like this baby. It's a shame though. I'm going to have to sell it because I can't really afford two computers and I need the laptop for school(in class tests).

So to anyone thinking about which computer to buy, I think a Core 2 Duo mini would be my top recommendation.

Sorry, I knew it was a lame thread but just couldn't help myself. What I'm wondering is, why post a one word response if you don't like the thread? Well, whatever.

How much will you be selling it for? or are you not ready yet?

I'm trying to sell it locally first to avoid paying shipping and paypal.

Wouldn't I pay shipping?

But thats cool. I understand.. I suppose I should get the Merom MBP first anyways.

This is a little weird thread though. The Macbook is a Mini with a built in screen and keyboard. Basically. Just the looks are different. Which is important ;)
Love my Macbook though :D

I have my Mini prepped up and good to go too. Start listing on eBay this Sunday, 10 day auction brings it to end on 6th August... just in time for WWDC :D

Don't apologise. If he/she wants to be a moody little rat and reply all sarcastic, let them. They're the ones wasting time by writing pointless junk.

Just like I am now..

That's great! It's always nice to hear stories about people loving their Macs.

:)

It's a shame you have to put it on eBay though. Do you like the MacBook so far?

I really like my mini too. I bought it about a 6 weeks ago, is my first mac. I'd not even demo'ed a mac much in the Apple store, just a few minutes clicking around. I basically bought the thing out of sheer curiosity to try out OSX.

When the original minis came out a year or 2 ago I said I was going to buy one, but never could bring myself to pull the trigger. This time I was wanting a new computer, mine was about 3.5yrs old. Still got the job done for what I used it for, but I just wanted something new. Plus XP was beginning to drag a lot, would need to reboot every day or two for occasional freeze ups. But after having to reformat and install win98 every 6 months, 3.5yrs on this XP install was pretty good to me.

Its amazing what the mini can do, what all in packed in that tiny space. Plus its completely silent. My old pc had so many fans running you could easily hear it across a large room. But I just got so used to hearing the sound of those fans that I almost didn't notice them. But, when I would want to watch a movie, I'd have to shut off the computer because the noise from the fans was distracting.

I remember first turning the mini on and after 5-10min I said to my wife "you hear that?" and she said "hear what?" and I said "the sound of silence." :)

The mini isn't quite as peppy as I thought it would be, but it gets the job done. (I also got the core duo). I plan on putting in a 1gb stick sometime which should speed things up a bit.

But overall I'm happy with my purchase. Happy enough with macs that we bought a macbook a few weeks ago, which is my wifes computer. Her 3yr old Vaio was literally on its last leg. And considering I paid MORE for the Vaio than the macbook, that's sad.

I love the MacMini too. I'm in nearly same situation as you, I would get the Mini with wireless Mighty Mouse and Apple Keyboard, but I need a laptop.:( :D

I had the 1.25Ghz and 1.42Ghz G4 Mini and both were brilliant machines.

Apple really could do SO MUCH with them..

True, true! In fact, I am also ready to break down and get a mini just to play with it. I know it is not a good idea to buy it now since yonah is supposed to be EOL in mid 07 and 10.5 is coming out but still, a core solo is sooo cheap: 520 bucks... About 400 Euros. I spent more in airport taxes for the air ticket I just bought

I am aware of the Rosetta issue but I have photoshop and office for windows and I have an 80Gb drive I could switch as well as an external DVD burner and firewire HD

Once a merom-mini/macbook with an ATI chipset (never gonna happen now that AMD bought them...) and a 7200 rpm disk comes out, hopefully next year, I could just plug it into the TV and stereo and use the solo for music/pics/movies...and buy a new one... :D I am sort of tired of waiting for the "midi" to arrive and the G4 is ....sooo slow!

Does the reasoning make sense or would you guys still go for the dual core? I think I would have trouble "selling" a new computer to myself next year if I get the duo now, but if I get the solo, it would be an easier sell...;)

that's an understatement. It will make a world of difference. You'll feel like you got a new mac all over again! :)

I've always liked minis, and I might consider one once they go merom.

After a bit a of wait, I rec'd a reply from a MacWorld editor who did some iMovie editing on a Core Duo Mini. The Mini has 2GB Ram and handled rendering multiple effects just fine. My concern had been how the integrated graphics would affect iMovie, and ultimately FCE with regards to editing and playback. Now I'm just waiting on a bump, hopefully in 2 weeks. Though I would really love to see the Mini get the GMA 965 chipset with 128MB shared video. From what I hear, it is much better than the GMA 950.

There is a difference between chipset and a GPU.. so why would ATi stop supplying Apple with GPUs? AMD might have bought them, but it is not like AMD spent billions buying ATi over only to gut their egg laying belly... :p

My company, like many, was entirely WinDell. In late 2003, I was walking around in Frye's and passed through the Apple display isle. There proudly on display was a new Powermac G5 2.0 Gig dualie with the 23" cinema display. Naturally they had the sideboard removed so you could see the beast's inners.

I was blown away. The only mac I had seen for many years was my brother's eMac. I was immediately smitten. I have followed a somewhat conventional path from programmer to IT Manager. But, I still 'roll-up my sleeves' a few hours a day to do development. I knew I wanted this machine, but there was not justifiable reason to buy it. The closest I could come was my learning video production. Even that was a stretch. I was using weak PC software (Pinnacle), and even thought that was pretty cool.

Then the planets lined up. I had a great annual review and my boss wanted give me an added bonus. I was told I could buy up to $15,000 worth of technology for my own use and ownership. I was also given an annual stipend of $3,000 to remain current with hardware and software revisions. Fortunately, I was sitting close to her desk and she could only seen me from the waist up.

It did not take me long to realize Apple was the finest hardware and software company there is. OSX is simply the best desktop OS in the world. So after too long a story, we come back to the Mini. I bought one of the originals for my wife. I could see some possibilities. My company uses Citrix extensively (we have many remote locations). Over the past year we have been buying Wyse and HP thin clients. However, I started using Mini's as Citrix clients. They are the same price once you add in the USB wireless, which is standard with the Mac. It is just a better deal.

Today, I was authorized to use ALL Mini's for Citrix clients and they also approved a 25% deployment of iMacs for standard workstations when iWork has a suitable equivalent to Office Standard.

Now, we just need a way to replace the MS Back Office.

All I want is a Mini that uses standard desktop hard drives and I'll be in love.

I mean that will be a great day for me, a Mini with a 500 GB drive hehe

Someone shout this guy a beer!

Yeah, I too would love a Mini that takes desktop sized drives. Better yet it will also have room in it for 2 desktop drives!
