Hi, what worked for me:
- create bootable USB stick according this tutorial (the DiskUtiliy part)
- download Google Noto-fonts: https://www.google.com/get/noto/
- install the downloaded fonts on the USB stick in ...\System\Library\Fonts

I did that and a hundred other things. Some of the font messages have disappeared, but I'm still getting a bunch of "TSplicedFont failed creating descriptor for..."
messages. It is weird that log entries continue to scroll even after the failure "An error occurred while preparing the installation"

My machine is a mid-2010 iMac 21"

Here is what I've tried:
- erased internal hard disk
- performed First Aid on internal HD
- set the date and time with Terminal
- created a 16 GB bootable USB of High Sierra using DiskMaker X
- created a 16 GB bootable USB of El Capitan using DiskMaker X
- Cmd-L and Cmd-3 to see log entries
- reset PRAM
- tried installing to an external hard drive -- same result
- tried installation with and without Ethernet cable connected to Internet
- patience. Let it run all night, even after the failure message.

There is about 500M of data on the hard drive, presumably from the failed "preparation". I haven't examined it because I don't know how.

I am not able to use Cmd-R or Cmd-Option-R or Cmd-Control-Option-R because my machine is too old.
Is there a way that the BIOS can be upgraded?

I'm pretty sure that the PRAM reset failed because I'm not hearing any beeps or seeing any feedback.

I've totally run out of ideas. Nothing has worked.

I wouldn't mind trying another OS, maybe Mavericks or Yosemite, but I can't find a source to download the full installation APP.

Any suggestions?

If you can get into safe mode, and run safari, download a mac cleaner
When my MacBook Air stopped during the high Sierra release, I had firmware issues.
I ran Mac cleaner, the trial version, and that worked.
