I just returned 5 consecutive iPads over dead pixels

and then gave up...

I just returned 5 consecutive ipads, 3 just now while standing in Best Buy opening them, handing them to the manager, pointing out the dead pixels, and opening the next, because of dead pixels.

I want an iPad. Very badly. But I also don't think its acceptable to sell a $900 essentially screen with manufacturing defects.

I felt really bad about the whole thing- the folks at Best Buy were really nice and understanding, and I nonetheless felt like a neurotic OCD freak, but I mean, the dead pixels were there, no matter how badly I didn't want to see them.

Needless to say- I am iPad-less... are there good and bad batches? Are we supposed to just accept a few dead pixels? What am I missing

Damn you! I hadn't even thought about dead pixels until this post. Then went hunting and sure enough, one dead pixel on my 64gb 3G iPad bought back in June. And I had to look, cleaning off my 13 month old daughter's smudges from playing "Bubbles" and my TCBY sticky fingers from using the iPad on flights around the country. Never thought about some of those smudges and random dots beige dead pixels.

Yeah, there may be some defects, tolerate them if you can, "screws fall out all the time, the world's an imperfect place" or not if you can't. I have an 23" Cinema Dispaly with one dead pixel that used to drive me NUTS! Then I added a 30" and moved the 23" over. Haven't noticed it since. Please don't make me look for the dead pixel on the 30", I don't want to start obsessing about it/them. :)

If you think you'd benefit from having it and it'll add value to your day, don't sweat it. How many bad stitches do you suppose there are on your car seats or on your couch?

Law of diminishing returns, that's all I'm saying....

But yeah, more than two or three or in annoying places, keep swapping until you get a good one.
 
I'm not saying you didn't find ones with defective pixels but I would not say it's the norm.

I've bought 4 iPads and I check every one by running a Keynote slideshow with different colored screens. Not a single one had any stuck or dead pixels. So perfect screens do exist and those I've personally tested it's been 100% good.

Well I went to one of those screen test websites to test mine, tested perfect. There are rumors floatIng around about people running the screen test and pixels becoming unstuck, you might want to try it.

I am a gadget freak wanna be. With the exception of the iPad and iPod Nano, I have always been a late adopter. I remarried into an older 15 inch LCD monitor, we still use it, it has no dead pixels. (My TV has a CRT :()

I know that early LCD monitors had rules on what was acceptable for dead pixels, but because of advances in technology, I thought dead pixels were a thing of the past. I haven't seen them on other peoples or work monitors in years. I wonder if it is something the ipad screen manufacture is doing to cut corners ?
 
I'm so happy I have not had a dead pixel on my iPhone, iPhone 3G, iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, or iPad. :p

I am really lucky I guess. I did have significant backlight bleeding on my 3G though.
 
Have had Three 3GSs (One replaced due to fault, and one is my fiance's)
have an iPhone 4
Have a 3G 64GB iPad
Recently got a 13" MBP

None of these have dead pixels, I am very happy they don't but at the same time, I am not excited or overly happy, because I expected top quality gear.

Not that the odd faulty one doesn't get through or anything, but as others have said, expect the best, and don't accept anything less.
 
Wow. you got rocked.....or maybe Best buy got rocked.

I can't believe they let you open and return 5 iPads all in store right then and there. I would have given you the boot after 2.
 
Keep in mind that dead pixels and stuck pixels are different.

If a pixel is black, it is dead and cannot be fixed.

If a pixel is red, green, or blue, then the pixel is stuck. When a pixel is stuck, it can usually become unstuck. Rapid color changes are typically the best way to unstick a pixel. In the HDTV world, the movie Cars is usually recommended for that task. This may also work in the iPad world.
