I just setup an iCloud account on new iPhone.

Hi, I just got a new iphone 4 and when I set it up it asked me to set up an iCloud account, which I did.

I then set up the phone to back up through iCloud. does this mean I never need to plug it into iTunes?

If so, how do I get my music libary ripped from CD onto the phone (I get that my apps i have on my itunes account will just download over the air because they are on the apple server)?

If I have it set to back up through iCloud can i also back up the phone to the computer incase incase i need to restore and don't have an internet connection? Is it possible to have both going on?

Also whats the deal with the @me.com email it got me to set up? Can I use that as my main email? Or is it no better than the Aol email account I have now?

I intend to get a new mac computer soon and I gather if I use iCloud now things will sync up nicely between my iPhone and Lion?

The only thing that wouldn't automatically sync is music that you don't get from iTunes. If you have music from CD's or other sources, you'll either need to plug in or get iTunes Match in order to transfer it. Once you plug in the first time, you can enable Wifi syncing from then on, or if you plan to just get all your music from iTunes, you can just download it directly to the iPhone.

So if i turn on wifi sync, all the music I load onto itunes from cd will instantly get copied to my iphone over the wifi?

if you are using itunes match. any music you download from itunes will be there...other ones you load yourself you have to do with itunes match.

But if I have wifi sync turned on wont they sync over air?

so the only to sync your music to your iphone is by plugging it in with a usb cable? wifi sync wont do it?

It won't be instant, but they will copy over to the iPhone. In order to turn on Wifi Sync, you have to plug the phone in, and in iTunes check the box for "Sync with this iPhone over Wifi". It will sync automatically with your computer anytime it's plugged into a power source.

No, iTunes Match is not necessary for this. This only works on local Wifi, but will transfer music without signing up for iTunes Match. It doesn't give you the upgraded files and the cloud syncing of iTunes Match, but it will sync while you're on the same Wifi network as the phone and the phone is plugged in.

Nope, the other poster was misinformed. You can sync over Wifi just fine.

When does iCloud back up your iPhone? Does it do it automatically?

Does iCloud back up all your game saves too?
 
icloud backup replaces your iTunes backup. By default it backs everything up. You can edit this in settings > icloud. It backups once per day, over wifi when your phone is charging and screenlocked.

Wifi sync is separate. It replaces the need for a cable. It will sync everything that normally syncs during a wired iTunes sync.
 
Ok, so what are the advantages of backing up to iCloud and not iTunes? Im not sure if it's a good idea to put all your private phone information/ texts/ contacts...etc up in a cloud somewhere is it?

Does ICloud also back up your photos on the iPhone? Or do you have to turn on photo stream to do that?

Yes, your photos are backed up. Photostream is kind of like a "realtime" dropbox for photos. Photostream-enabled applications such as iPhoto and Aperture on your Mac can access photos in your photostream moments after you take the picture on your iOS device. AFAIK, it stores the most recent 1000 photos, or up to a certain time period (can't recall). You can store them permanently in iPhoto or Aperture by moving them from the Photostream Event to a normal local event.

It keeps them in the cloud for 30 days.

As long as iPhoto is opened on the computer while those photos are stored in iCloud, they download to iPhoto and create their own event there. The computer stores all of them, it copies them from the photostream. The iphone, ipad, ipod all only store the most recent 1000 photos.
 
If you want to be completely PC free (with some limitations), you can practically do everything using iCloud.

But, if you're music is from somewhere else - and not just iTunes purchases, then you will have to get iTunes Match. (I bought it just before Christmas, it's great!)
I have a few iOS Devices, and the aTV too - iTunes Match keeps them perfectly in tune with each other.

This has already been covered, and is false. iTunes Match is only required if you want to sync via the cloud, which was not the question that was asked. While it's a good service, and I enjoy having it myself, it's not necessary for what the OP was asking.

Its a shame i cant use the iCloud @me.com email as my main email though :(
 
Why would anyone use the @me.com icloud email over another service anyway? Won't the emails get blocked from being sent too you when you hit 5gb? or does email storage not count towards your icloud 5gbs?
