I Just want to mark items as read, so they go away- texts, emails- why can't I?

It just bugs me- an email shows up on my lock screen, I want to mark it as read right there- is there any way to do this? Same thing with texts.

In the lock screen the only way I've found to remove a notification is swipe the notification itself, but that takes you to the application it is from. Or of course the "slide to unlock" action which takes you to the homescreen. From there you can however go to the notification center and there should be an "x" you can press to delete that notification without going to the application.
