I know there has been rumors and gossip about Apple TV becoming a gaming platform..

..But do you actually believe Apple will try and steer :apple:TV into a situation, where it will be considered a gaming platform, e.g. a games console?

I believe Apple could consider it, if the gaming on the iPhone/iPod Touch become mainstream. That way, :apple: will have a reputation with gaming companies, like EA, and could port games over to the :apple:TV.

I think this will be years away, as it will take a while for the iPhone/Touch gaming to become mainstream, but one day, who knows? :confused:

I agree with you. Another point is that I don't think that gaming was ever the intention of the appletv. It is merely a media player.
 
If they bring games to it, it will not be designed to battle sony, nintendo, or microsoft. I can see some basic games for it, but the thing would need a major overhaul in the hardware department to be used for gaming. Don't get me wrong, between the iPod and iPhone, it would be nice for interactivity, but I think Apple has other things in mind for the Apple TV (namely DVR, as those recent patents have shown us).
 
I think casual gaming - iPod-style - would work well, and that's the market Apple seems to be going after.

DVR? I can't see Apple getting into anything having to do with TV (except providing TV content via iTunes).

Apple doesn't get into a new business unless it can make something infinitely better than what exists. Can they do that with game consoles? That would be tough at the moment. However, given the popularity of using accelerometers in gaming (the Wii), I see Apple as a potentially big player in handheld gaming with the iPhone and iPod touch, using accelerometers and the touch screen interface.

They published a patent for it already (doesn't mean their making it, but still).

It would help sell Apple TV's and iPods, which is Apple's goal. They make almost nothing on music/video purchases through the iTunes store. The store exists to sell Apple devices, as would a DVR in the Apple TV.

Imagine being able to set up shows at any time over the internet through your iPhone/iPod. Then being able to sync that recorded content to your computer and then onto the device of your choice. I see this as a definite future possibility.

Also maybe a few basic games.
 
Out of all the possible additions to the AppleTV line that have been discussed, the "game console" option makes the least amount of sense to me. Video games are becoming insanely competitive, with the market currently supporting three consoles, two portables, and whatever manages to make it to PC/Mac. Even eliminating all but the most "casual" games, AppleTV would have to do too much just to get noticed, much less create iPod-like success.

On the other hand, things like a BluRay Player and DVR seem like a more logical progression for the AppleTV's existing design, and both seem to have a market waiting for them. A person who is considering an AppleTV would probably want a DVR or DVD player, or have one they'd like to replace.

Apple's track record with gaming has not been that great. It just seems they really don't see that segment of the market as worth the effort. The only way I could imagine games on the AppleTV would be if adding them cost Apple nothing .

Ah. The curse of the Pipin *shudders*

That was pre Steve Jobs. He wouldn't allow such a product, unless he was sure it wouldn't fail.
 
The right backdoor approach to this is to have iPod Touch and iPhone games be able to stream their video over WiFi to the :apple:TV and played on your larger screen. Sort of like the PSP and PS3 do now. It gives the owner of one an incentive to be the owner of the other.

Of course, iPod Touch and iPhone integration doesn't need to stop there. They should be able to stream music and video on the unit as well to the :apple:TV.

But iPhone and iPod touch aside I would think the :apple:TV should be able to play existing iPod (not touch) games. I don't really understand why we don't have that much yet.

Apple TV didn't just fall off the :apple:Cart yesterday. Sometimes I wonder what the level of commitment to this hobby is. Seems like plenty of hobbiests are able to get more done with this thing pretty fast.
