I have a live little, gnat like object crawling around inside the monitor of my iMac. I tried to squish it from the outside (since that's where I thought it was) but it kept moving. I've never seen anything like this before so I'm a little curious to know if anyone else has ever has this happen. Surely this thing can't live forever, and when it does die, it will appear as a little speck forever on my screen?

WOW.

That's a first for me, never heard of something like this with any computer before! :D Is it possible your intruder jumped in during your iMac's manufacturing at the plant?

Take a picture, this is very very interesting stuff.

how do I take a picture of it?

I don't know how to do that so can someone please tell me how I can get a picture of a part of my desktop?

That IS weird! I had some kind of dead bug fall out my speaker grille on my [aluminum] iMac! I'm being 100% serious.

Living in the Philippines for 4 years had big problems with ants - loved DVD cases for some reason, but also moved into my iBook. Hundreds inside main body (no joking) - give the case a tap and they'd coming pouring out the vent grill to investigate. Never saw any walking on inside of screen though. After clearing them out kept iBook within a circle of 'Ant Chalk' drawn on table, which kept all but most persistent individuals away.

is that stuff real? if so thats awesome lol

I haven't had bugs behind in my screen but I have had a hair work it's way slowly down the inside of my ACD. At first I thought it was a crack and then realize it was a hair as it moved down. Probably got in there at the factory I guess.

Also, my G5 Quad came with a tootsie roll in the bottom of the box. I didn't eat it but thought it was nice of Apple to give me candy! :D

gnat is either dead or gone

I tried to take a picture of the gnat with my camera but the thing was too small for the camera to capture. I haven't seen it around for awhile, so it either was able to find an escape path or died. Either way, I can't see it on my screen right now so I am relieved that I won't be having that thing around on my screen forever. It still seems really strange that something like the monitor, which I thought was sealed tightly, could end up with some tiny creature moving around on the inside of it.

What if it laid its eggs inside your iMac and the babies will grow up and eat your processor?

Sorry, my fault. It must be one of my virtual ants. Found an ant nest (and eggs) in my router, attracted there its warmth!

Have you tried using a debugger? I think Xcode comes with one.

Ant chalk...

Yeah, ant chalk is for real. Looks like regular chalk, but ants (and other small creepy crawlies) won't walk over it. Lasts a few days before having to redraw the circle. Doesn't kill them though unless they get covered in the powder. Probably made of something nasty & banned in all civilized countries! The other solution would be to surround iBook with water, as ants don't swim either, but not very practical.

Is it like this ?

Thank goodness nobody has had this in an iPhone yet - or there would be class action lawsuits and millions of separate forum threads on here!

My suggestion to the OP would be to lift off the screen (use a couple of sucker pads) and see if anything falls out when tilting the iMac (Presuming its an Alu iMac)

Otherwise - think of it as an individualist screensaver :)
