I know why there is Backlight Bleeding on Al iMacs!!!

On my quest on opening the imac, i left the imac on for a little while i took the glass panel off. Once I took the glass panel off...TRADA!!! no more backlight bleeding!!! i found out that the foam around the edge of the lcd in the places where it is unusually bright, the foam is sticking out, and the glass, pushes it in, somehow, allowing more light to escape, causing backlight bleeding, i will play around with this more later and see if i can stop it on mine without doing anything queer. just by pushing the foam and testing. I need time to do because i need to settle the dust in my room to make it safe so that dust doesnt get inside, i need to close the air conditioning vent and stuff things under the door. it was quite a journey, but I think its a start.

It sounds like you are talking more about backlight bleeding (corner brightness and so on) than uneven backlighting (gradient issue).

plain bad design. The foam is just sticking out, and the glass pushes it in, and the foam is in the areas where the bleeding happens. And I witnessed it appear as i started to put the glass on, very slowly. Just need to report to Apple.

With the amount of times you take your glass panel on and off is there NO possibility you screwed anything up yourself??

It's not intended to be user removed.

My panel has no backlight bleeding.

No damaging... just a piece of cat hair all the way at the bottom, basically hidden by the border, and you only notice it when its off, even when you look for it while its on, you can find it

Do you have the guts to take off your glass and control the dust be an air can or something? And take a picture if you , or explain how it is, is the foam all at one level? It may have to do with the panels making them stick out, if only we could find out the types of displays each person has and if they have backlight bleeding without taking off the aluminum casing, that i do not have guts for,and even if i did, i dont have the proper tools, just 2 suction cups, plus the suction cups from my spyder2pro.

Another trick to keep down the dust .....'mist' the room with water.

Get a clean aerosol pump bottle, fill with clean water and 'spritz' it around the room. be careful to prevent too much spray from hitting electronics.

Also spritz your self from head to toes.

You do not have to SOAK anything, just mist it, I think you get the idea!

I don't think "guts" has anything to do with it. I have no reason to remove the glass panel.

A few weeks ago when I noticed a slight scratch or shadow on my screen I was convinced it was a streak on the rear side of the glass panel that I had just failed to notice up until then. I had convinced myself to get some suction cups and at least pull the panel and take a look before going through the hassle of sending it back to Apple. In the end I decided it wasn't worth it, let Apple sort it. I didn't want dust behind the glass and as unlikely a scenario as it is I didn't want Apple giving me any crap about voided warranties if they could somehow prove I removed the glass.

I sent it back to Apple and they immediately verified it to be a defect of the LCD panel itself and replaced it. It turned out pulling the panel would have been all for naught anyway.

If you see backlight bleeding or any other problems on your screen I would advise you to stop with the self-service routine and to send it back to Apple to let them sort it. They make the machines I assure you they know how to fix them.

This is why I advise you to be very clear in your list of problems to include backlight bleeding. If they agree that the display has this problem then of course they will make sure to send it back to you with no bleeding.

Just make a list (and check it twice ).

I actually did find one dust speck at the upper left corner of the screen which I never notice at all and am not even going to think about opening up to remove myself. It is not a problem for me and I never see it.

Thank you so so much. Yeah, I have dust on the inside of mine, i couldn't get it perfect, but better than before. I cant see it cuz the display is soo bright!!!

How long did it take? I called AP. They said opening the imac doesnt void your warranty.

i, however, would suggest using a few small suction cups with handles to remove the glass from the magnets... i wouldn't use packing tape and getting tape marks on your screen.

I have some pictures, if you take the actual glass off, its gone (I think, its been a while), but you can see the foam padding out of place in the areas where the bleeding is coming from.

i can kinda see what you mean from that photo... but i just don't understand how foam that is not flush with the actual screen (under the glass) would cause a light leak... unless there is light coming up along the side of the screen, or from behind the screen, and the foam is there to block it ?? also, didn't you say the light leaks disappeared when you took the glass off? so it seems that either the glass is reflecting light, or is pressuring against the foam and making it no longer light-tight... ??

Your efforts shall be greatly appreciated. Just remember, no fans, no open windows, close all A/C and/or heating vents and a moist towel under the doors. Wait about 20 minutes for all the dust to settle in the room then off you go.

last night at the apple store, i casually mentioned to the head technician at the genius bar that the iMac screen's can be taken off with suction cups, and that one user online claims the glass pressing up against foam around the screen to cause light leaks... he kinda froze and immediately said (in a serious tone) "i can not confirm that the glass can come off this way"... hah... so i guess they're trained to not let anyone know about the glass... pff, big secret...

then i told him about the youtube vid where the guy uses his toilet plunger to remove the screen... he didn't seem impressed... *sigh* good times at the apple store.

... this may have been mentioned already on a different thread, but i'm now wondering if the slight color gradient and uneven lighting that is visible on some machines is caused by the screen bleeding... so like, if you fix the bleed than the color shifts go away?
