Just got my nMP a few minutes ago. As I'm looking at it with the shell off, I think I actually like it that way. Anyone running without the case? Any reason not to?

Dust, static electricity, spilled coffee...

Yes
The enclosure, being aluminum, is an integral part of the nMP cooling system.
Run with it off at your own risk...

They do look great without the casing :)

The cooling systems as far as I know is designed to work as a channel. It moves air from the bottom out the top (or other way round, not sure). If you remove the casing the air being moved will come out the sides before reaching components further in. It is possible that some components will therefore not be cooled properly. Im not sure if this would cause any serious problems.
On top of this the dust buildup will be much higher in the machine.
Depending on where you have placed your machine, it is easier for components to be damaged if you lets say bang it with your foot or knock it over.
Static electricity, from for example vacuuming in the viscinity, can reach the parts much easier, the case protects them.

Yeah, I guess it wouldn't be a good idea. I'm just surprised how much I don't like the shell. I wasn't expecting this metallic gray look, I think it's kinda tacky. I wonder how much the local body shop will charge to paint it something less ... cartoonish.

Don't think it will boot with the hood up.

There's a small magnet embedded in the shell that lines up near the switch, I'm sure you can stick a small RE magnet at that point and it would boot.

Do it. It will be awesome I'm sure.

*re-reads*

Oh. You're probably right.

Re the casing: I've not seen one in the flesh, but from the official portraits I'd assumed it was glossy piano black. Looking at photos of them in the wild I'm still not entirely sure what colour they are – looks like they have adaptive camouflage!

Yeah, that's what I thought. It's actually more like black chrome. Or those shiny magnetic rocks you can find in souvenir shops, that's exactly what it's like.

Not related but... Is it a silent one?

............
Has nothing to do with your suggestions.
However...may I ask if it works silently?
Thanks for the info!

It won't run without the case on, for good reason, to prevent idiocy like taking it off because it looks good.

Well, you're just a total *******, aren't you?

Nope! I post a lot of technical information on this forum about the Mac Pro, and felt that if you had done a simple search instead of starting yet another thread about the Mac Pro without the cover, we'd all be better off.

But maybe we needed another thread on this subject, and one with a sexy title that would be sure to lure people to read. If so, then my apologies, and I retract that it would be stupid to want to leave a cover off of the nMP.
