I really do like the idea of extending the social experience of music. Following bands and getting feedback on bands that they like is nice.

It does have a way to go. Does anyone else get recommendations that are really odd? My music library is filled with progressive rock and jazz, but Ping recommends that I follow Katy Perry, Ke$ha, Lady GaGa, and Miley Cyrus!

Does Ping use anything like your iTunes Genius to pick these - ahem - "artists" or are they pushing people to anyone that logs in? If that is the case, then Ping goes from a neat idea in the making to really lame.

This is the exact reason that I stopped using Ping. Like you I listen to a lot of jazz. The recommended artists are the furthest thing from Jazz artists. Plus, the people that Ping says I should follow are people that I don't know or even care to know. In a word Ping is Lame.

I get the big names (some of which I do listen to) and some I really do listen. It recommended I follow Celldweller who is rather obscure, but I have in my library.

I have never cared much for social networking overall because why should I care what people are doing at this exact moment? This is just as useless as the rest.

I concur on the social networking, but the lack of really good and accurate suggestions may be due to a very limited selection of artists on Ping right now. Maybe it would be better not to recommend anyone then, but realize that part of it is they just don't have much to offer you at all.
