I hope the Europe models get iChat, ringtones, and more. I hope they get all the cool software we didnt' get in the US and lots of options and MMS! I hope that everyone in Europe with an iPhone gets to gloat about all the cool features they have that the US version doesn't have.

No I haven't lost my mind. The reason why I hope this happens is because the US consumer base for iPhones and media will turn to Apple with, "umm what gives with the Euro model? and why did you gimp us in the US?" .

Apple will in turn respond with "Don't look at us, we really want to add all of those features to the US model". Apple could say that while pointing the finger at the US cell network. Effectively putting pressure on the AT&T to allow more Euro like features on the US version of the iPhone.

Ugg.

If the Euro-Phone comes with ichat MMS etc.. they apple will offer a firmware update the same day IMO.

ATT is not holding anything back short of things they may not have the server tools for YET. Like some have mentioned for MMS.

Software takes time.

Not everything is a conspiracy.

....
Not everything is a conspiracy.

It is what it is. I'm not pointing out some sort of unfair control by US cell networks that doesn't exist. The major US cell networks have tremendous amount of control toward cell manufacturers offerings and consumers compared to Euro cell networks. It is what it is.

cell phone providers suck around here. I'm in Canada, think about how I feel! Cell phones here are cheap and any added feature is even worse!

The Stig

Would this be the same one that practically gave apple keys to their front door sight unseen to be the exclusive iphone provider in the US?

Again. Things take time.

absolutely nothing you mentioned in your post is a hardware or carrier limitation, but rather software limitations. all of which should eventually be addressed via a software update.

I don't think Europe will get a better iPhone because Apple know that if they do (no offense) but the people who don't get the the better iPhone will bitch but on the over side if Apple don't update their iPhone for Europe.. it may fail.. so its lose lose for Apple.

Agreed, it's lose-lose.

However, the bigger loss would be releasing the current iPhone in Europe. No-one would buy it at all.

Europe expects at least 3G -and maybe the extra-functions the OP speaks of as well.

Exactly but could you imagine how many bitch threads their would be? It would bring the forum down xD

i doubt it's at&t ... like others said, every other phone has MMS and IM on them. it isnt like At&t restricts that. it's more than likely apple who hasnt added them in for reasons none of us know.

I just believe that this is iPhone 1.0. They'll add new stuff whenever they're willing and able, just like with every other product. 3G, iChat, GPS, I'm sure it will all be unveiled over time. The first iPod wasn't nearly the product that the current one is. It's amazing to me how people feel that they're entitled to all the things that they think Apple should make.

Personally, I think the huge thing would be 3G + iChat with a reversible cam, so people could do portable video chats the way Japan's cellphones can. That would blow up the whole U.S. cellphone industry.

Does this mean that ichat will support msn? Or are the euros gonna take the America out of America Online?

As a mac purist in england i am eagerly awaiting the arrival of the iphone, but i think that apple should know that they have majorly dropped a bollack with the phone in its current form and/or completely misread the uk market because, picture messaging here is where its at - everyone does it so no mms= BIG mistake, wifi is not as established (out of the main city centers) as it is over in the USA so 3g/gprs is most peoples way of accessing the net via a phone, again relatively cheap t-mobile does all you can use web'n'walk for £7 a month, also the price anyone form the uk on here knows that no one pays for phones - you can get the n95 free on contract, lastly pda's arn't that big over here (again outside of the main citys). So all of these reasons really add up to a major mis-understanding of the playing field here.

That all said i would consider getting one if these features were added and the price was reasonable but only cos i love apple stuff, most of my friends even those in business wouldnt entertain getting one when as i said you can have a n95 for free its got a 5 mpixel camera mms capability, internet etc etc

Please apple sort this uber cool phone out before you ship it here.......:apple:

Apple is not going to give the Euro iPhone too many new features, most of them should be firmware updatable for US iPhones.

Maybe 3G, but then we'd get that model soon too

I somehow get the sense that the fact that its quite possible the euro iPhone will have access to better features is a hard reality for many to swallow.

I hope that Apple will take full advantage of whatever liberties it can regards to offering consumers cell phone service & features available through euro providers. Rather than purposely hindering themselves from marketshare just because they might upset US consumers.

Edit: i just remembered after i posted, someone in europe told me that one of the reasons AOL failed horribly in europe is because they tried to play the same control game in europe that they did in the US. I cant recall the details, i think AOL tried to charge an insane monthly charge, with a contract? Something like that. I know it was something that we in the US just rolled over for and accepted like we usually do, but they werent trying hear that nonsense in europe.

Anyway , not sure how that applies to the euro iphone, i think it applies along the lines of when in rome do as the romans do and there a very good reason to do so. Ask companies like AOL

I agree with the OP. It will work to our favor, whether Apple adds it to US units, or Euro units get unlocked for worldwide use.

How about Asia?

US, later Europe. What about Asia? Asia have half the population of the world, but then still no news about iPhone release. I just can't wait for it to arrive in Malaysia. I hope when it comes, it will be 2nd Generation with HSPDA and more new function. :)
