I lost my AirPods charging case on the bus while both AirPods were in my ears... I have lost and replaced (via Apple, $69 each), both left and right AirPod individually so technically I have lost the original AirPods combo I bought. The only way I can buy the case is $79 wireless charging case, but I find it a bit too hard to swallow, plus I don't need wireless charging. I am also considering selling my AirPods without the case on eBay and just buy a new 2nd gen AirPods. Mine is 1st gen so this way I am upgrading the earphones as well. What do you think?

Amazon has third party solutions of various - and dubious - value.

My first set of AirPods took a cycle through the washing machine; the buds survived but the case was ruined. I got a desk charger off Amazon and it’s been working fine. I use that setup in my study for the AppleTV.

Amazon also has 3rd party charging cases at ridiculous prices; if you go that route, by all means, report back on the quality.

look for used ones on eBay and what not. With third parties you wont be able to repair them so that’s a deal breaker.

This is true.
I ended up getting another set of AirPods and I use that case to pair my old buds.

I went through a lot of mental gymnastics - buy a case, find it used on eBay, 3rd party, etc. - before I bit the bullet and bought another set. It hurt, but having a portable set and a set of AirPods by my computer has worked out really well.
