I can't even handbrake a movie without it getting too hot and shutting down. I even have coolbook installed and used the settings from the 'huge success undervolting' threat. Is anyone else having this problem? Please respond with support/help/hugs.

Dear Mr. Jobs,

I am not writing this email to rant, but I do want to let you know that I am growing displeased with the way I have been treated by Apple Customer Service. I have had my Macbook Air for roughly 4 months now and the system has been plagued by growing issues as time has gone on. Initially the occasional slowdown I experienced from Core Shutdowns was tolerable, but now 4 months in I am getting shutdowns at completely randomized times. I have taken the computer to three different Apple stores and called the Customer Service and AppleCare. The 5th avenue store told me I should get a replacement, but they were not able to get me one as I was only visiting New York City. When I went to the King of Prussia and Suburban Square stores at home they told me that there was nothing I can do, but wait for a firmware update. After a few months of waiting, I have not heard of any firmware update in the works and all I hear about is Apple moving towards new products. I truly hope that this issue gets resolved and that Apple does let me fall by the wayside. I have owned Apple products for the past 8 years and enjoy the relationships I've had with store employees and other Mac users, but I really would like this issue remedied. Can you offer any insight into what is going on?

Sincerely,

Matt

but that sounds quite cool, that there will be a software-update! hope it's not only about the core-shutdowns but also about the fan-problems.

I'm not blowing smoke, I looked around to see if there was a way to go to a higher up and in many places I saw a recommendation to email that address. They say most often it is just an executive customer service agent, but I found this one interesting because it showed up in my email as steve jobs. Even if it isnt I found it cute how it added the sent from my iphone, oh well I hope this update comes soon and isnt in the form of buying a new computer

the thing is not meant to do any heavy lifting so I just stopped trying and use another machine for demanding tasks. This way i avoid frustration.

Still is a great machine for moderate use.

niche item IMHO.

But others may have better results.

There are numerous ultra lights, UMPC's, mini tablets, and micro PC's that have similar limiting characteristics.

For instance, in the UMPC category, many of these tried to use Windows Vista at some point making them virtually unusable, do to the dog slow 1.8 4200rpm drives and underpowered CPU's.

The Air's cpu is not underpowered ; but that's the problem in many instances as they tend to overheat when driven to perform anything but simple tasks.

I personally hate the 4200 Hard drive in this (it's about half as fast as a 5400rpm) and am a bit piqued that they chose an odd 5mm SSD instead of a 8mm which seems to be much more popular and available to install myself

I mean, sure thin is in, but it's proving to be a real drag in this regard.

@TheRiseOfaFail: as it is a software update I don't think it only comes with new Airs.

the 8mm will not fit as discussed here before

It could have fit if Apple had designed it that way - the Air's external dimensions and shape forced some compromises that, IMO, weren't worth it.

another thing.

The new SSD's (i've done a bit of digging as I wanted to install one) are about twice as fast if not faster than the Samsung in there now. Now this is really 2X.

Mind you, regular hard drives have never had this kind of speed bump but apparently this is so for these new dual-cell solid state drives types.

Problem is, from what i've seen they are all 8mm drives that will not fit in the AIR in it's present incarnation.

Of course Apple could get one made to spec or change the spec slightly on the AIR to shoe-horn one in.

But If they don't do this , and decide stick with the present Samsung 5mm, I'm going to sell mine no matter how much I like this thing.

Note: all it would take to fit a 8mm would be a new bottom case; which essentially just a single piece (except for the swinging port door)

my question is everyone knows the size difference in the ssds but had anyone actually tried to install an 8mm if you've cracked open the MBA there is some space between the shell and the hard drive would it be possible to slip a 8mm in there? I know it should be 5 but I'm just curious if anyone has actually tried

that's what i was wondering as I know the regular spin drives probably have some cushioning that the SSD's don't need at all.

But it's the bracket that could be a problem. (But you might be able to use a different bracket if you were lucky ,assuming your also lucky about the depth)

But untill someone actually tries it's just speculation.

I'm a bit surprised that no one has. But then again, these SSD's are not exactly cheap.

Also, since i am speculating wildly :D , I might not be adverse to just shoving an 8mm in there with minimal supporting structure in order to gain some depth as it is probably light with the flash memory chips already very well protected in it's case. Of course it would somehow have to be secured. But from the looks of it, there's a slot a least.

You might also be able to modify the existing bracket.

http://www.ifixit.com/Guide/First-Look/Mac/MacBook-Air

Form the looks of this, it just might be possible to do. The cables on top of the drive might be a problem if they can't fit over the larger 8mm drive.

I may crack the case and takes some measurements.

For instance , here is a new Mtron VERY fast 1.8" SSD 32GB IDE zif 8mm at a resonable price point.

http://www.mydigitaldiscount.com/SP...ta-ide-zif--aluminum--80000764-1211532789.jsp

These were announced on Rumors a few months ago where they assumed that they were going to be 5mm.

Well they assumed wrong (as one prudent posted warned about at the time) as they are all 8mm.

why I'm trying to install an 8mm when there ARE 5mm SSD's out there? Here is another drive form the site above that would fit perfectly in the AIR unmodified:

http://www.mydigitaldiscount.com/SP...-1-8''ide-32gb-w-zif--8000061D-1201557507.jsp

As you can see, the Mtron 8mm is 3x faster and more than $100 cheaper :D

But this seems to be a particularly slow drive (according to the specs) The Samsung used in the AIR presently is faster (about half as fast as the Mtron above for reads)

Ok, something else must be wrong with your system. I have the same model, 1.6 with 80gb drive. I can Handbrake a movie even with it wrapped in a Vaja leather suit.

Granted this only works with Coolbook enabled and I did replace the thermal paste.

Here are my settings for Coolbook that work for me.

600 - .9000
700 - .9000
800 - .9000
1200 - .9125
1400 - .9250
1600 - .9500

Throttling level high with 85c.

I use these settings for both Adapter and Battery.
