I-Mac Memory Question

I recently purchased a I-Mac 24" 2.8.
I was checking out the crucial site for a memory upgrade and they show 4 gig (2g chip x2) for about 160 dollars. That same upgrade from Apple store shows it for 1,000 dollars. I can't imagine what would cause such a disparity, am i looking at something wrong?

That's why pretty much nobody recommends buying memory from Apple.

No, you're not looking at anything wrong. Apple charges an exorbitant amount of money for RAM. I almost got sucked in and bought Apple RAM two weeks ago. I saw on this forum that I could get RAM cheaper, so I ordered it and sent the Apple RAM back. Now I'm waiting for my refund. I got 4 GB RAM from OWC for $155 and it works perfectly! Never buy your RAM from Apple, and never upgrade the RAM on a new Mac during the purchase. Just buy from OWC or one of the other places that carries reliable Mac-compatible RAM and save yourself a LOT of money!

Your looking at everything correctly. I think they should do something about those prices. It is not fair to the unsuspecting consumer.

Apple charges a lot for memory. You should go to OWC, a Mac specialist, for your iMac memory.

You can go anywhere for imac memory it just has to meet PC2-5300 DDR2 SDRAM requirements.

I don't have an iMac yet, but my pc (piece-a crap ) is making me regret Vista badly, plus she's an old girl. I hit that link you posted and the price is $39.99 for 2gig of memory?! This is insanely cheap. Everyone is sure this will work with the new iMacs, and not cause a performance hit?

The reason I ask is that the iMac purchase will be to not only quiet the wife down who gets tired of the daily BSOD while she's doing stuff, but for me to play a solid game of World of Warcraft, and not worry during a mission that the machine will reboot on me. Many a time with either XP or Vista has my current machine had me log back on to a dead player.
