I made my first movie in iMovie today...

Yes, I love acting stupid and making fun of myself... My sister is to "my" left (right side of the video).

The best part? It ONLY took me 10 minutes to record, edit, add effects, and compress this movie. -and- I've only used a Mac for 2 days... -and- this is the first time I've EVER used iMovie HD.... AMAZING peice of software.

Ok.. this post did have another point to it (a question) I'm not sure how to tell the effects where exactly to go in the timeline... Well I kind of do, but only with "dragging" the effect to the time line. I read in a book that 00:00 is seconds:frame well, imovie would only let me specify up to 00:10 or 10:00.. i'm not sure what was going on... i wanted an effect to come in at 13 seconds and leave at 22 seconds but 13:00 and 22:00 wasn't accepted by iMovie for some reason.

Wouldn't 13:00 and 22:00 mean 13 minutes to 22 minutes? 00:13 and 00:22 maybe? I never used iMovie.

But is it easier than Windows Movie Maker? I mean, that is the most easy yet functional thing I have ever used.
 
Good first attempt! Isn't it amazing how intuitive this is on the Mac....

An easy way to apply effects how and where you want is to slice the clip at the desired starting point (command + T) and slice it again at the desired ending point. Now you have a clip the exact duration as the desired effect duration you had in mind. Now apply the effect to the entire clip.

Of course, slicing a clip this way does nothing to the continuity of the movie.

coo, thanks... i'll apply that to the sequel video, and then post it in this thread (probably by the weekend) i may even buy a book so i can learn the ins-and-outs of imovie hd. i wonder if the new macbooks coming up will be able to handle it?
 
I've been working with iMove HD as well, but mostly for converting old VHS tapes to DVD without applying any effects. However I was also baffled by how to add effects or titles, etc. until one day I just decided to try EVERYTHING and found that I could indeed drag the effect/title/transition into the timeline.

I've seen apps that were easier to work with and I've seen apps that were certainly faster to work with, but I still really like iMovie as long as I'm capturing the video myself directly into iMovie and not working with some existing video file.

i thought of doing the same thing. what do you use to capture the video from the vcr/vhs tapes?

NO!! Movie Maker is SO MUCH easier than iMovie. I am the freaken Movie Maker Master (back in my windows pre-premiere pro days), it is the easiest program I've ever used. iMovie is more difficult for me, the funny thing is iMovie is harder than FCP for me...
In my experiences with the programs...it is definitely different for others

before i had fcp installed on my reboot i was playing with imovie. i couldnt figure anythign out!

You have to litteraly dumb yourself down to use it... It took me a while my first time to. "WHERE IS THE OPTION TO ADD THE EFFECT AND THE SETTINGS"
-friend "jus drag it in..."

I disagree with you about that, while imovie might have a steeper learning curve then Movie Maker, you dont have to worry about imovie crashing every 5 minutes and then you have to start from scratch. The finished product looks so much better then ANY windows program. I have had my mac now for 3 weeks and loving every movie I make, from titles (idvd) to the actual film it all looks and sounds so much better then Movie Maker, or ulead movie maker, or Sony Vegas.

I never mentioned how stable Movie Maker was (not too stable. I lost a lot of projects because windows is such an amazing OS).
 
I find I like iMoves better but they still crash like crazy, the intel version (universal) on intel sucks, it runs better on my PowerPC crashes less.

I am impressed with how much better the movies are compared to what my friends produce on the windows movie maker.

Personally imoves is easy, never had to read a manual it is very very easy to use.
