I Need Help Slipstreaming SP2! This is driving me nuts! ;)

I have an XP cd. I have SP2 on CD.

I have XP installed on Parallels so I can mess with the XP environment.

But I having a doozy of a time trying to get this to work. I found an excellent guide on the net, but it made me download Nero, which refuses to ever work.

I need some excellent step-by-step instructions on how to do this. I am going crazy. I really want to make a bootable XP cd so that I can use Bootcamp....

Please if you have resources or advice to share, I would love it.

Again, my eternal thanks. (stupid XP, why isn't there a CD burning program included?)

Plan B: If someone burn their copy of a bootable XP SP2 CD that they have, I would pay for the shipping and the CD to get it shipped.

(Note: I have a valid XP key. I only, however, was given as a graduation gift from my best friend a copy of XP with NO SP2.)

Since I do not need a key, this shouldn't be illegal...

So why slipstream? Are you also planning to run Boot Camp?

Just run the XP in Parallels, stick your SP2 CD in and install it.

What version of Nero did you grab?
Are you trying to use Nero in on a PC or in Parrallels?

If Mac can burn ISO images, you should be able to slipstream it in Windows.

Well... I finally got it late last night. I had to have DirectX 9.b to run Nero for some reason (interface maybe? lol. Something like DirectX for an interface!)

I got it to work. I did everything the tutorial said. I'm about to try XP again.

I used the lasest version of Nero to make the cd.

But Mac OS X cannot recognize the CD and still thinks it is blank. How do I get around this?

What should I do the next time I try to burn a CD under parellels?

I was in the same situation, but I did something different (and, from the sound of it, MUCH easier):

First, I fired up Parallels (you don't need the slipstremed OS install for Parallels, since it is fine installing first the base XP then SP2)

Then, I grabbed a copy of the free nLite: http://www.nliteos.com/

Following the nLite instructions, I copied the XP CD to my Parallels desktop, pointed nLite at it, popped in the CD with SP2 on it, and told nLite to Slipstream it from that.

nLite happily does this, producing an SP2 XP install CD on your disk. I then told nLite to build an ISO image from this, and put it in the Parallels shared folder (it complained about not enough space, but did it anyway).

At that point, I just burned the ISO using Disk Utility in the MacOS, instead of screwing around with getting Parallels to try to burn discs.

Worked perfectly!

I say that because I'm a Mac admin who hates Windows and seems to have a knack for making it go belly up just by touching it.

Update: I labeled a blank cd... so that's why it was empty... but I forgot the give the XP SP 2 cd the name that my XP cd had....

Maybe that's why it won't boot?

If you could give some instructions with Disk Utility, I would be very grateful...

I would 2nd the http://www.nliteos.com/ option.
This worked great for me.
There are numerous options other than nero for the .iso image.
In fact I burned the .iso image to a dvd using dvddecrypter which I had open at the moment and it worked fine.

I daresay it can; I read through those instructions, but decided that nLite looked a lot easier. And indeed, it is--far less question about what you're doing, and nothing to type in--just one drag-and-drop from the CD, point it to the right folder and SP2 installer, and tell it where to save the image.

You can also have it preinstall other junk if you want (for example, the Mac drivers for installation on a Mac), which would be awesome if MS had a nice "bundled updater" for the 40-some security updates SP2 needs, but it's not worth the hassle (to me) to download each individually and load it for as infrequently as I install Windows at work.

Hmm... no idea if Windows cares about the name of the CD--I don't think so. nLite can name the disc anything you want (it defaults to "WinLite" or some such), and that seemed to be fine.

As for Disk Utility, once you've got the ISO somewhere the MacOS can see it, all you do is click the "Burn" icon, and point it to the .iso file. That's it--it would be hard to get any easier.

Remember, by the way, if you still have Parallels running you need to tell it to disconnect the optical drive before the MacOS can use it again.

Ok.
I used NLite to make the iso image. Worked beautifully.
That was easy. I was even able to use the slipstreamed version of XP.

But now that I have the iso image, I can't see where to make that a .img.

And what do I do in Disk Utility. Open image?

Like I said, no need to make an .img, Disk Utility knows exactly what to do with .iso files. Just click the "Burn" icon at the top of the window and select the .iso.

Or, if you prefer, select "Burn" from the "Images" menu, then select it. Or, yet another method, if you drag the .iso into the window it will appear on the lower half of the lefthand pane, underneath the physical discs. Select that and either click "Burn" or you can right click on it and select Burn image.

And yellow--have you tried nLite? If not, I'd give it at least a shot--it REALLY is that easy.

Finally. XP at last.

I burned the iso image, and everything is swell. Even my wireless worked first try. How wonderful.

And this post is coming from XP. But the text sure is ugly.. Anyway to get the double finger scroll feature to work in XP?
