I need help - what is this network equipment??

Hey guys! I don't know too much about network equipment, but I just acquired a whole rack of this stuff and I dunno what this stuff is. Basically, I had a client who defaulted on a payment and this is was I received in leu of my payment. Hopefully some of you might know what this stuff is and know how much it's worth.

Here's some pictures and some model numbers of some of the stuff I got (sorry the iPhone pics aren't that clear):

First is a Cisco 3640. I have two of these, and they both have these big handles on the back and these things slide out by the handle. They look like video or sound cards, but I know that's not what they are. Anyways, both units are identical, and look like this:

Second, this thing says its a Cisco 2811. Only one of these:

Third is an Adtran NetVanta 4305. I have two identical ones of these too:

Fourth is this really heavy APC Smart UPS 1400VA (I think its a 950watt power supply). It looks like this:

Fifth is 3 different 3Com SuperStack things. Each one is alittle different:

Then there's these things. There's 5 separate ones, but I dunno what they are:

Oh and there's something else called a BayStack Access Node Hub.

Also, all of this stuff is mounted on this really tall, heavy rack thing. Maybe this is worth something too.

Anyways, what is this stuff for? Running a website? A company network or something? Hell if I know. I just hope all this stuff is worth more than the $750 that was owed to me.

The last one is for running a network. It's a huge router essentially I think. We use the same ones in our schools. Did you try Googleing the names and model numbers?

first one is a box that will manage QoS (quality of service) for your incoming/outgoing internet connection, that box reached its end of life in 2002, second one is a cisco WAN router, you plug a wireless card into the PC slot that is probably useless nowadays. the NetVanta boxes are VPN boxes. the UPS is just that, a UPS (uninterrupted power supply) so if the power goes out that keeps your servers or networking gear going. the three 3com boxes are all ethernet routers. probably just 10/100 base-t (these days anything less that 10/100/1000 is unacceptable). and the last picture is your patch bay. that is where are the ports in your office or house or whatever get wired to. thats where you punch down all your ports. then you "patch" from those ports to your routers, modems, whatever networking gear. patch bays allow you to plug ports into whatever networking gear you have. is the patch bay cat-5? cat-5e? cat-6? if its anything but cat-6 its once again probably useless. cat-6 is the standard these days and anything less won't give you as solid a connection.

honestly, it looks like you got a bunch of junk. i'd take that client to small claims or whatever.

If it was worth more than $750 your client would have put the stuff on eBay himself rather then conning you into hauling his junk off for free. The Cisco equipment holds some value. It was very expensive when new not now $100 on eBay per box.

The trouble is testing. It you could log in using the serial port you could verify that the unit works but if you don't know how to to that you can only say "as is" which seriously devalues an auction.

Here's what I found on eBay for these items.

Cisco 3640: Looks like they are worth between $20 and $200 each.

APC Smart UPS 1400VA: Looks like it's worth between $100-$250 each on average.

BayStack Access Node Hub: Seems to be worth between $20-$50 each.

3Com SuperStack: Appears to be worth between $10-$50 each on average, although some were listed nearer $200, so apparently it depends on the specific model/capacity.

It appears you will be able to recover some of what you're owed, but not likely anywhere near the actual debt. Good luck on recovering your losses.
