For various business reasons, my dad must leave his medical billing company and use a competitor, which is far less intuitive and more expensive. The entire system is application-based, and all computers must run either XP Pro or Vista Business. One of his computers at the front desk has Vista Home Premium. We have an extra copy of an XP Pro Upgrade sitting around.

Can I use the XP Pro Upgrade to retrofit on the computer that currently has Vista Home Premium?

Thanks.

Try, but I doubt it.

I can't believe the software will only run on Vista Business rather than Vista Home Premium as they are practically identical. If that is really the case, run, run far away. The software is clearly a pile of crap of epic proportions and you will have major problems down the line. Its worth giving the package as we may be able to find a replacement, if not try asking on Arstechnica...

PS This should be in Windows on a Mac.

Another problem you may encounter, is installing a OS version on another machine than it was originally registered on. I am gathering though by your post that this is a windows PC machine rather than a Mac running Windows on it. If it is, I would buy the upgrade to the business version for it. Likely $159

It is terrible, and that's why my dad started his competing company that's web-based instead of application-based. It's truly a much better system, even today when the code hasn't changed much in almost five years, and it's significantly cheaper than anything else in that market. However, his company has been marred by mini-Enron executives and blood-sucking vampires, so he had no choice but to resign last week and find something new.

We ended up returning the XP Professional Upgrade and ordered the Vista Business Upgrade. Apparently, Vista Business is being discontinued, so I had to act quickly.

I've installed Windows on so many computers this weekend that I'm going to scream if I see the XP installation screen again. Luckily, I have a brand new MacBook Pro to come home to.
