Ever since the X was released, people have been criticising the notch.

Honestly, I just notice it.

Maybe it’s because I have a black XR but the notch and ears for me register as part of the informational part of the screen so it just doesn’t bother me.

I’m interested to know why exactly many people have an issue with it (aside from being very nit-picky) - or if there are many others who feel the same way as me.

Cutting into the screen like that is never a good solution.

especially as phones are now big media consumption devices and a lot of video is being watched and streamed.

Look at phones like the Oppo Reno and OnePlus 7 Pro.

1440p 90Hz AMOLED Screens with basically full screen coverage.

These even look more advanced than the hole punch iPhone 2020.

if they ran iOS, I would have had one yesterday!

Also they have flagship specs too.

It’s definitely more pleasing and better design overall.

Don't care about the notch never have.

Now, don't get me started on the camera boil on the back that needs to be lanced. THAT, I do notice. And since the iPhone 6 I've never liked it.

Surprise
When you only use a notched phone every day you get used to it. However if you bounce back in forth between a notched device and a non notched device it still is very irritating.

It doesn't bother me enough to complain about it, but is most definitely there and noticeable. Sometimes I use it as a guide to make sure I'm holding my phone with the right side up.

now i see it

Yep, you see posts from people saying they'll never own a phone with a notch. When I got my iPhone X it I almost immediately realized that I never even notice it in my day to day usage and when I do it's a complete non-issue.

If Apple's iPhone is the holy grail for you then obviously the notch will be overlooked or downplayed. Personally I like my Xs, but would prefer a phone without the notch or at most a small hole like some newer model phones are using. I'm sure Apple will eventually go that route or get rid of it altogether. Until then we need to rationalize the notch in order to keep using and supporting Apple.

Agreed. The iPhone 5s now seems impossibly small compared to the XR, but I miss the fact that the camera was completely flush. Still the best iPhone form factor imho.

Ooooh, I see the notch, I see the notch on both my XS Max and P30 Pro, big or small I cannot avoid it, I don’t really mind it anymore, but I cannot wait until it’s gone.

I have a Hauwei Y9 Prime for review and it has a pop up camera, and it is absolutely glorious to watch YouTube in full screen on it without any notch:

Yeah, the good old notch, except it is not good, but bad, very bad.
I notice it, every time I use iPhone XS Max. And, if my previous iPhone did not die, I would’ve not gone to this Xs max thing, which has a notch and a poorly designed home bar.
iPad Pro 2018 on the other hand, does not have notch. So watching video on that feels a lot better. Too bad that 11” has a screen ratio of 7:5, which makes some keyboard keys a bit squished.

Can’t do a small hole when you’re using multiple cameras. Apple is waiting until you can do a camera underneath the screen a d still function as a camera.

The iPad Pro's bezels are as thick, if not thicker than the notch itself. That's why there's no cutout for Face ID, and therefore notch.

Yes, but the bezel also leaves spaces for me to hold in both portrait and landscape mode. I like this design choice here.

A bezeless design on large screen almost always only work for monitors.

Doubt it will break easily, it’s already been through multiple reviewers and one of my mates who is also reviewing one has truly abused it.

In normal usage it should last a few years, probably longer than most people’s batteries which will need replacement before the pop up camera.
It’s still the weak link. Kind of hard to unlock phones with a face if the camera is inside the phone also makes it non-waterproof at a time when all high end phones are waterproof.

Really? People are still complaining about this? Here I am using the iPhone X since it came out and no one I know who has a current iPhone has ever mentioned it being a problem.
